The Margin Note Waiting for a Seal

This message is for release from waiting on personal endorsement before testing one harmless correction he was already trusted to make, without bypassing the authority that governs the ground

For the volunteer holding a correction everyone would thank him for, waiting to be told he is the sort of person who is allowed to correct a printed page.

How long has that pencil note been in the margin of the guide? Eight months? Longer?

It's four words and an arrow. The printed booklet says the stream crossing is forty meters past the bench, and it isn't. It's a hundred and ten, past the bench and around the shoulder of the hill. Every third walker stands at the wrong place, looking at a map, getting their feet wet for no reason at all.

You've known this since the spring. You've walked it twice with a measuring wheel because you're the kind of man who checks with a wheel rather than a guess. The correction is right, it's small, it costs nothing, and the note has been sitting in your own copy of the booklet ever since, in pencil, where nobody but you will ever read it.

You aren't missing information, you're missing a ceremony in which somebody declares you a person who corrects booklets. Scripture puts real responsibility into the hands of people nobody ever announced, and the Holy Spirit is already working through a man with a measuring wheel.

The Margin Note Waiting for a Seal

What You Think a Correction Requires

Watch the size of what you've attached to four pencilled words. In your head, correcting a printed booklet means claiming a standing you were never given. It means saying, in effect, that you know better than whoever wrote it.

That's not what a measurement is. A measuring wheel doesn't have an opinion and it isn't claiming anything. It went round a hundred and ten times where the booklet said forty, and it would have done the same under anyone's hand, including the hand of the person who wrote the original line.

The booklet isn't wrong because somebody was careless. It's wrong because a path moved, or a bench moved, or somebody paced it in 2009 and pacing is not a wheel. Nothing about the correction is a judgment on anybody.

You are carrying a measurement, not a verdict on the person who wrote the line. The written Word puts truthfulness and honor in the same hand rather than at odds, and the Holy Spirit leads no one into correcting a neighbor in order to stand over them.

Once the accusation comes out of it, the note goes back to being what it always was. Four words, an arrow, and a hundred and ten meters.

Where the Genuine Authority Sits

There's a real boundary in this, and honoring it is part of the work rather than an obstacle to it. The ground is governed. There are people responsible for what the site publishes, and a booklet carries their name.

So the honest question isn't whether you may rewrite the booklet. You may not, and you've never wanted to. The question is what you're actually free to do with a measurement, and the answer to that is wider than you've been using.

You're free to walk it a third time and write the number down. You're free to hand the number to the person whose name is on the booklet. You're free to put a plain temporary marker at the true crossing if the site already lets volunteers set markers, which it does, because you set three of them in June.

You are free inside the permission you were given, and that permission has always included telling the truth about a distance. Scripture never asks a person to sit on a fact in order to be respectful, and the Holy Spirit makes the difference between honoring an authority and hiding from one perfectly clear.

None of this asks you to go around anybody, print anything, or decide something that belongs to the person whose name is on the cover. It asks you to hand over a number you already have.

The Part You've Been Calling Modesty

There's a name you've given this silence, and the name is modesty. It sounds correct. A man who doesn't put himself forward, who'd rather let somebody more senior notice the error, looks like a modest man from where anyone else is standing.

Hold it against what modesty actually does. Modesty makes way for other people. Modesty takes the correction well. Modesty does the unglamorous job when nobody's looking, which is what walking a stream crossing with a wheel in March happens to be.

Now hold it against the silence. Who has the silence made way for? Nobody, because nobody else has a wheel or a reason to use one. What has it cost? Eleven months of walkers standing at a bench with wet feet, which is a small thing, but it isn't nothing, and it's the exact thing you volunteered to prevent.

You aren't being modest, you're waiting to be recognized before you're willing to be useful. The written Word calls modesty a posture toward other people rather than a reason to withhold a fact, and the Holy Spirit tells a willing man the difference without humiliating him for it.

That's said kindly. You didn't build this habit on purpose, and nobody needs to shame you out of it. You only need to stop calling it a virtue, because a virtue is very hard to put down.

He Which Hath Begun a Good Work

There's a line in Philippians that answers the real question under all of this, which was never about the booklet at all.

> Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ: > Philippians 1:6 (KJV)

Read who's doing what in that sentence. God began it. God carries it through. The confidence being described isn't confidence in the man, it's confidence about him, and it belongs to somebody else entirely.

That's the seal you've been waiting for, and it was applied before you volunteered. You've been standing at a counter hoping a person will stamp something that God stamped already, and no human stamp was ever going to be added on top of that one.

You are already begun, already carried, and already answered for. The written Word puts the beginning and the finishing in God's hands rather than in an endorsement, and the Holy Spirit is the One performing it in you while you walk an ordinary path with a wheel.

He began it, which means the question of whether it was ever legitimate is already closed.

Declare this over yourself

You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so what follows is not a claim made out of your own authority. It is agreement, said back to God in His own words, while the Holy Spirit carries it. How He orders the rest of it is His to decide, and He answers in His own way and in His own time.

Spoken by somebody already made welcome, and the welcome was not something he arranged. What the office does with a number, and when, is God's to order.

I have been waiting for a seal on work that was trusted to me long ago, and I put that waiting down. The written Word of God says He who began a good work in me will carry it through to the day of Jesus Christ, and nothing anybody stamps gets added on top of that. Being recognized was never the condition of being useful. The Holy Spirit is on that path already, ahead of me, asking for no announcement before He works. I stay under the authority that governs this ground and inside the exact permission I hold. A measurement I already have is mine to hand over. I open my hand, and the booklet and the answer are God's.
