For the brother who was asked for his honest thought and gave her the safe one instead.
She asked you straight out. That's the part that has kept this in your chest for four months, because a moment you were not invited into is one thing and a moment you were invited into is another.
You were standing at the counter with the plantains half done and everybody else in the front room. She said she wanted to know what you actually thought, not the polite version, and she used your name at the start of the sentence, which she only does when she means it.
You said something about it being her decision, and that you'd back her either way. That was true, it was kind, it was about a third of what you had to say. She took the plate through and the evening carried on.
One careful answer is not a betrayal, and it did not leave your sister short of anything. Scripture says let your speech be always with grace, seasoned with salt, while the Holy Spirit is at work in the next welcomed moment rather than the one four months behind you.

What Your Careful Answer Actually Did
Be exact about it, because the version you have been carrying is heavier than the facts support.
It gave her your support, which she now has and knew she had. It did not give her the specific concern you'd been turning over since Easter, which she asked for and would have weighed. Both of those are true and only one of them has been keeping you awake.
What has not happened is harm. She is not in difficulty because a sentence stayed at a counter. She has other people, her own judgment, and a God who was in that decision before either of you got near it.
She was not depending on your timing, and she never has been. The written Word calls for speech seasoned with grace rather than for a brother who never misses a beat, while the Holy Spirit tends your sister without needing your mouth to be quicker.
That's worth holding, because the weight has been real even though the debt was not.
Why It Stayed in Your Throat
There's a reason it didn't come out, and it is not cowardice, and it deserves to be named accurately.
An honest concern, said to somebody who has already made up their mind, can land as opposition. You have watched that happen in this family. You have also watched what it costs afterward, and you know exactly how long it takes for a room to get back to normal.
There's something else underneath it. If you'd said it, and she'd gone ahead, and it had gone badly, you would have been the brother who saw it coming. Nobody wants that job. Being right about somebody you love is among the worst positions a person can occupy.
You were protecting her and protecting the room, which is not the same as being afraid. Scripture puts grace and salt together rather than in opposition, while the Holy Spirit makes a hard word land as care rather than as opposition.
What the Next Opening Requires
Here's what the road forward actually looks like, and it is smaller and more careful than you might expect.
It does not mean going back to that conversation. That decision is made, it is hers, and reopening it now would be about your conscience rather than about her.
It means the next time she asks, and she will, you give her the whole answer she asked for, in the words you would use with somebody you respect. You ask first whether she wants the full version. Then you say it once, and you leave it, and you back her either way exactly as you said you would.
Permission to speak is given by the person who asks, and it has to be asked for again each time. The written Word tells you how you ought to answer rather than telling you to volunteer, while the Holy Spirit gives the words in the hour they are wanted.
What You Are Not Responsible For
There's a weight in this that belongs to somebody else, and it is worth handing back deliberately.
You are not responsible for how her decision turns out. That was never yours, not at the counter and not now. A brother who gives his honest thought and a brother who gives his careful thought are both standing in the same place afterward, which is outside a decision that belongs to a grown woman.
You are also not responsible for making sure she has heard every true thing you know. That is an impossible job and nobody has ever held it. What you are responsible for is the character of your speech when you do speak, which is a much smaller and more manageable thing, and which Scripture actually names.
Watch what happens when you put the outcome down. The next conversation stops being a rescue. It becomes what it is, which is two people who trust each other, one of whom asked a question and one of whom answered it.
You are answerable for how you speak, never for how her life turns out. The written Word puts grace and salt in your mouth rather than results in your hands, while the Holy Spirit carries what a brother could never carry.
That's not permission to say nothing. It's the removal of a load that was making every sentence feel like a verdict, which is precisely why nothing has come out since Easter.
That Ye May Know How Ye Ought to Answer
There's a line in Colossians about how a believer speaks, and its final clause is the one for a man at a counter with a knife in his hand.
> Let your speech be alway with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man. > Colossians 4:6 (KJV)
Answer. That's the word. Not initiate, not seize, not make sure you never miss one. The whole sentence is built around responding to somebody who has spoken first, which is exactly the situation you were in at that counter.
It also promises something. That ye may know how ye ought to answer. The knowing is treated as available rather than as a talent some people have. It is not describing men who are naturally quick. It is describing people who have been given what to say when a question comes.
You are promised the knowing of how to answer, and it arrives with the question. The written Word ties that knowing to grace and salt rather than to a fast mouth, while the Holy Spirit supplies it in the moment somebody asks.
Declare this over yourself
You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so what follows is not a claim made out of your own authority. It is agreement, said back to God in His own words, while the Holy Spirit carries it. How He orders the rest of it is His to decide, and He answers in His own way and in His own time.
You speak here as a brother God has already brought near, from a place you did not earn your way into. When the next honest opening comes, and what you say in it, is God's. This makes room. It does not make demands.
I am not silenced, and the safe answer I gave my sister in her kitchen is not a debt I am carrying. The written Word of God says let my speech be always with grace, seasoned with salt, so grace governs how I speak rather than how quickly I speak. Her wellbeing never rested on my timing and it does not rest on it now. The Holy Spirit meets the moment with its own words, ahead of my arriving in it. Nobody was charged for the sentence I withheld. I will ask her before I speak into what is hers. My hand is down and my palm is open, and every conversation with my sister is God's.
