For the writer whose finished work all lives in one folder with two words written on the tab.
It's about nine in the evening and the lamp on the desk is the only light in the room. You've just finished one, which takes about eleven hours over three weeks, and it's good.
Six pages. A passage, three questions that actually open a room, a section for people who have never read anything like this before. Then a note at the end about the one part you find difficult, which is the bit everybody says they remember.
Then you put it in the folder. Green, second drawer, with two words on the tab in your own handwriting from about six years ago. Internal only.
There are forty-one in there. All finished, all checked, all of them sitting in a drawer under a label that nobody in your organization has ever asked you to apply.
You wrote that label yourself, and you have been obeying it as though somebody else did. Scripture says where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty, while the Holy Spirit is at work in a green folder in a second drawer.
Where Those Two Words Came From
Be exact about it, because you did write them and the reason matters.
There was a season when material got circulated without checking, and somebody's work went out in a form they were unhappy with, and there was a difficult stretch afterward that everybody remembers. You were not the person that happened to and you watched the whole of it.
Internal only was your answer to that. It was sensible. It protected you, it protected the organization, and it meant nothing left your drawer that you had not decided to send.
That season ended about five years ago. There are processes now. There is a person whose job includes exactly this, and there has been for three years, and you have never once used them.
A sensible precaution outlived the season that made it sensible. The written Word ties liberty to the Spirit of the Lord rather than to a label on a drawer, while the Holy Spirit does not govern His people through six year old handwriting.
The Rule and the Person Who Made It
There is a version of this that goes back and names her, and it is not coming.
It would go back to that season. It would name what happened, who handled it badly, how long it took to settle. You could supply all of that accurately, because you were there for every week of it.
It would also leave you heavier and still at a drawer, and it would land on people who were doing their best in a genuinely difficult stretch.
You can be released from a rule without reopening the season that produced it. Scripture rests your liberty on the Spirit of the Lord rather than on anybody being held to account, while the Holy Spirit takes weight off a person instead of handing them more.
Nothing here asks you to raise it or revisit five years. The folder gets lighter, and nobody else has to move first.
What Sending One Does Not Have to Produce
A different version of this goes wrong, and it is worth turning down before it is offered.
That version says these forty-one have been held back. It says that once they get out they'll be used widely, that something will grow, that the years in the drawer will be redeemed by reach.
That is not on offer. You might send one and hear nothing for four months. You might send one, have it used by two groups, and find you do not enjoy the questions that come back. You might send one and decide the other forty stay where they are.
Every one of those is free. Freedom is the label coming off the drawer. What happens afterward is a separate matter entirely and it proves nothing about whether you are free.
Freedom here is a label coming off, not a number going up. The written Word puts liberty where the Spirit of the Lord is rather than in an outcome, while the Holy Spirit gives a freedom that is complete before anything is sent anywhere.
A reader who takes the label off and still sends nothing this year has received the whole of this. The drawer is not the problem. The handwriting on the tab is.
There Is Liberty
There's a short sentence in the second letter to the Corinthians that says where freedom lives, and it is not where most of us look for it.
> Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. > 2 Corinthians 3:17 (KJV)
Liberty is located rather than produced. It is not something you generate by being braver about a drawer, and it is not waiting on the far side of a decision you have failed to make for five years.
It is where the Spirit of the Lord is, which is the room you are sitting in at nine at night with a lamp on and a green folder open. The liberty was in that room while you were writing, and it was in it when you put the pages in the drawer.
That changes what tonight asks of you. Not the manufacture of freedom, which you have been trying and failing to do. The use of a freedom already present, which is a much smaller act.
Liberty is where the Spirit is, which means it was at that desk before you sat down. The written Word locates freedom in His presence rather than in your nerve, while the Holy Spirit is in the room with the folder already.
There is something worth noticing in the timing of that. He was there before the folder was named, before the old rule was written, and before you learned to apply it to work nobody had ever asked you to restrict.
Which means the liberty is older than the label. It did not arrive today with this message. It has been the condition of that desk through every one of the eleven years, including the ones where you never once considered sending anything out.
Declare this over yourself
You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so what follows is not a claim made out of your own authority. It is agreement, said back to God in His own words, while the Holy Spirit carries it. How He orders the rest of it is His to decide, and He answers in His own way and in His own time.
Say these as a woman already claimed, out of a standing that was never provisional. Who reads the lessons, and whether anybody ever does, stays with God.
That limit is not mine and I do not live under it, and two words typed on a folder in another job are not a rule over the work I do now. The written Word of God says where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty, which describes where I already am rather than where I am headed. I refuse the label and I refuse it without laying a charge against whoever first used it. The Holy Spirit is in this work before I sit down to it, out ahead of me. The label is off this work, and I write as somebody it is off. Nobody has to ask for a lesson for that to be true. My hand is up and touching nothing, and every page in that folder is God's.
