The Ninth Chair Beside the Old Circle

For the host who counts to eight without thinking, in a room that seats twenty.

Suppose a woman arrives at a hall forty minutes early and starts pulling chairs off the stack by the wall.

She does eight. Always eight. She sets them in a ring with the gaps even, checks the circle from the doorway, and moves two of them about four inches because the ring is never quite right the first time.

The room takes twenty comfortably. Tonight there are eleven names on the list and three of those are new, which she noticed this morning and has been slightly anxious about since.

She will set eight and then, when the eleventh person arrives, she will fetch three more from the stack while everybody watches, which makes the last three arrivals feel like an overflow rather than like people who were expected.

A number somebody gave you years ago is still deciding how welcome people feel tonight. Scripture says where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty, while the Holy Spirit is at work in a room with a stack of chairs against the wall.

Where Eight Came From

Be exact about it, because you have been counting to eight for six years and have never once asked where the number lives.

A coordinator said it, early on, in a conversation about a different room. Her point was that a circle bigger than eight stops being a conversation, that the quiet ones drop out at nine or ten, and that it is better to run two groups than one that nobody can speak in.

That was good sense. It was also about a specific kind of evening in a specific building, and it was said by somebody who never saw this room or these people.

It became a rule. You could not have said who made it or when, and you would have described it, if asked, as simply how many chairs you put out.

Good sense about one room in one season hardened into a rule about every room. The written Word puts liberty where the Spirit of the Lord is rather than in a number somebody once mentioned, while the Holy Spirit works in a circle of eight and a circle of eleven alike.

The Coordinator Who Named Eight

There is a version of this that goes looking for her, and it is not coming.

It would name the coordinator. It would point out how much a stray sentence can cost over six years, and how unhelpful it is to hand somebody a maximum without a reason attached.

It would also leave you heavier and still counting to eight. It would land on a woman who gave sensible advice about a room she was responsible for, with no idea it ever went anywhere else.

You can be released from a number without prosecuting whoever said it. Scripture rests your liberty on the Spirit of the Lord rather than on anybody admitting anything, while the Holy Spirit takes weight off a person instead of handing them more.

Nothing here asks you to raise it or revisit six years. The room gets lighter, and nobody else has to move first.

What the Ring Is Actually For

Here's the question that gets underneath the number, and it is a better question than how many.

What is the ring for? It is so that everybody can see everybody, so that nobody has to raise their voice, and so that a person who has not spoken for twenty minutes is visible rather than hidden behind somebody's shoulder.

Judge the count by that rather than by a rule. Eleven in a ring in a room this size still meets all three. Fourteen might not, in which case two rings would be better, and that is a judgment you are entirely capable of making because you have been watching rooms for six years.

The coordinator's reasoning was sound. What got carried forward was her number instead of her reasoning, and the number is the part that does not travel.

You inherited a number when what was worth keeping was the reason behind it. The written Word locates liberty in the Spirit rather than in a rule, while the Holy Spirit gives a host the judgment to read her own room.

What a Ninth Chair Does Not Prove

A second telling of this goes wrong, and it is worth refusing before it turns up.

That version says you've been capping your own gathering. It says the circle will grow now, eleven will become twenty, and the size of the ring will be the evidence that you were finally free.

That is not on offer. You might set eleven chairs and have seven people come. You might decide, having actually thought about it rather than counting on habit, that eight is right for this particular evening.

Both of those are free, because freedom here is the count returning to your own judgment. A host who thinks it through and puts out eight has received the whole of this.

Freedom is the number becoming yours, not the number going up. Scripture puts liberty where the Spirit is rather than in a crowd, while the Holy Spirit gives a freedom that is complete before anybody arrives.
