For the volunteer whose hand still stops short in a room where nobody has said no in years.
You lifted it about six inches and then you put it back on the table, and you covered the movement by reaching for your mug, which you have got very good at.
The idea was the welcome table. It has been the welcome table for about four years now, and it isn't complicated. Somebody at the door with a list, a pot of tea, names written down as people arrive so the second week is easier than the first.
The room was fine. Four people around a table with empty mugs and a stack of colored cards, an open notebook, and nobody in any hurry. There was no reason at all not to say it.
Except there was a voice checking the room first, and the voice belongs to somebody who has not attended that meeting since 2021.
A limit is still being enforced in that room, and the person enforcing it left four years ago. Scripture says stand fast in the liberty with which Christ has made us free, while the Holy Spirit is at work in a room where nobody has said no in years.
How It Got In
Be exact about it, because the mechanism matters more than the person and the mechanism is still running.
There was a leader who dismissed suggestions as a matter of style rather than as a matter of judgment. Not cruelly. It was a manner, applied to everybody, and everybody in that season learned the same lesson in slightly different ways.
What you learned was to check first. Run the idea past an internal version of that person, see whether it would survive, and only lift your hand if it would. That was an intelligent adaptation to a real situation and it saved you a great deal at the time.
The situation ended. The adaptation did not, because adaptations do not come with an expiry date and nobody sends a notice when the conditions change.
You built a good tool for a real problem and the problem left without telling you. The written Word tells you to stand fast in liberty rather than be entangled again, while the Holy Spirit does not govern His people through a memory of somebody's manner.
You are free to say it on Tuesday, and you have been free to say it for four years. The written Word puts the freeing in a finished act rather than in a change of personnel, and the Holy Spirit is the One holding that open in a room where nobody has thought about the old arrangement since it ended.
The Leader Who Said It, Left Out of This
There is a way to tell this that puts her at the center, and it is not the way this goes.
It would go back and name that leader. It would make the case, which you could make in about two minutes because you have four years of material and a good memory. It would leave you heavier, sharper, and still reaching for your mug.
That version also aims at somebody who is not in the room and who almost certainly has no idea. People rarely know which of their habits became load bearing in somebody else's life.
You can be released from a ceiling without prosecuting whoever built it. Scripture rests your freedom on what Christ has done rather than on what anybody admits, while the Holy Spirit takes weight off a person instead of handing them more.
Nothing here asks you to raise it, confront anybody, or explain four years. You walk out of this lighter, and nobody else has to move first.
What Is Not Being Promised About the Idea
A second version of this goes wrong, and it is better refused before anybody offers it.
That version says you've been held back. It says you'll speak up in every room from now on, your ideas will be taken up, something will grow as a result. It measures your freedom by what happens next.
That is not on offer. You might say the thing about the welcome table and have somebody say it's been tried. You might say it and have it adopted and hate running it. You might decide, having thought about it freely, that you do not actually want to raise it at all.
All three of those are free. Freedom is the ability to choose in a room where the choosing is genuinely yours, and it is complete at the moment your hand is under your own control rather than somebody else's memory.
You are free when the hand is yours, whatever the hand then decides to do. The written Word ties liberty to Christ rather than to an outcome, while the Holy Spirit gives freedom that is complete before anything happens as a result.
There's one more thing worth saying about the mug. You've been covering that movement for four years, which means part of the cost has been the covering rather than the silence. A woman who reaches for a mug to hide a hand is spending something in every meeting, and nobody has ever seen the bill.
That stops the day the hand is yours, whether or not you ever raise it, because there's nothing to cover once nothing is being overruled.
Stand Fast in the Liberty
There's a sentence in Galatians written to people who were sliding back into a set of rules they had already been released from.
> Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage. > Galatians 5:1 (KJV)
Entangled again. That word again is the one for you, because it assumes a person who has already been set free and is somehow back inside the old arrangement, which is exactly what happens when an adaptation outlives its situation.
Notice the tense of the freeing as well. Christ hath made us free. Finished. It is not something being arranged, or something that arrives when the room feels safe enough. It was completed, and the instruction that follows is simply to stand in it.
You were made free in a completed act, and the instruction is to stand rather than to achieve. The written Word puts the freeing in the past tense, while the Holy Spirit makes that standing possible at a table with four people and a stack of cards.
Stand fast is a strange instruction until you notice what it is not. It is not advance, and it is not prove anything. It describes somebody already on ground that was won for them and asks only that they stay on it. That is the whole of what next Tuesday requires of you at that table, with four people and a stack of cards.
Declare this over yourself
You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so what follows is not a claim made out of your own authority. It is agreement, said back to God in His own words, while the Holy Spirit carries it. How He orders the rest of it is His to decide, and He answers in His own way and in His own time.
Say these as a woman already held, out of a security handed to her rather than achieved. What becomes of the idea, and who ever takes it up, stays with God.
That limit is not mine and I do not live under it, and a leader who dismissed an idea in a different season is not a standing authority over what I offer today. The written Word of God says to stand fast in the liberty with which Christ has made me free and not be entangled again. I refuse the permission I have been asking of somebody who is not in the room. The Holy Spirit is in that meeting before I am, out ahead of me. The ceiling is off me, and I am moving as somebody it is off. Nothing has to be accepted and nobody has to agree for it to be true. My hand is up and touching nothing, and every idea I offer is God's.
