The First Peg on the Checkout Board

This message is for release from waiting for an unveiling before mounting the first peg of a tool board already entrusted to her, without enlarging the project or treating adoption as proof

For the volunteer who was asked to build the simple thing and has been waiting for somebody to make it official.

Suppose a woman is handed a sheet of pegboard, a bag of hooks and one sentence: it would be good if people could see which tools are out. That is the whole assignment. It took eleven seconds to give and it was given six months ago.

She bought a marker pen that first week. She measured the wall by the door and worked out that fourteen pegs would cover every tool worth tracking. She drew the layout on the back of an envelope, which is still in her coat pocket, softened at the folds.

What she has never done is put a single hook in the board. Not because she is unsure what to do, and not because anyone stopped her. It's because somewhere between the eleven-second sentence and the envelope, the pegboard turned into a project, and a project needs a moment when it starts.

You were given a small job and you have been waiting for a large beginning, and the large beginning is the only part nobody promised you. Scripture calls a person into work without staging it first, and the Holy Spirit is already at work in the plain thing in front of you.

The First Peg on the Checkout Board

How a Small Job Turns Into a Large One

Watch what happened to that pegboard between March and now. It arrived as a wall fitting. It became a system. Then it became a system that people would have to adopt, which meant it became a system that could visibly fail.

None of that was in the original sentence. Nobody asked for adoption. Nobody asked for a rollout. One person, on their way past, said it would be good if people could see which tools are out, and meant exactly what those words mean.

The growth happened inside you, and it happened because you take work seriously. A person who did not care would have banged in fourteen hooks in an afternoon and thought no more about it. The care is real. What the care did with the assignment is the part worth looking at.

You are not procrastinating, you are carrying a larger job than the one you were handed. The written Word measures obedience by what God actually asked, and the Holy Spirit does not require a project to be impressive before He is in it.

So the first thing to put down is not the work. It is the version of the work that grew in the dark while nobody was looking.

What One Peg Can and Cannot Prove

Here's the freeing thing about a single hook in a board. It proves almost nothing, and that is exactly what makes it safe to do.

One peg does not commit the building to a system. It does not require anybody to change how they work. It costs about a dollar, takes four minutes, and can be unscrewed by anyone who dislikes it, leaving one small hole in a board that already has plenty.

A reversible step is the honest size of the permission you were given. You were not given authority to reorganize the workshop. You were given a sentence about people being able to see which tools are out, and one peg mounted by the door is an entirely truthful answer to that sentence.

You are free to do the reversible thing today without needing it to become anything. Scripture keeps God's work moving through steps that look far too small to matter, and the Holy Spirit is not measuring the size of the step.

If nobody uses it, that's information rather than a verdict. Adoption was never what you were asked to produce, and a board that hangs quietly by the door for a month has still done what the sentence asked.

The Difference Between Ready and Finished

There's a word doing quiet damage in the middle of all this, and the word is ready. You've been treating ready as a condition you have to reach before you're allowed to move, when ready is simply a description of something that can be picked up.

Your envelope has been ready since April. The marker pen has been ready since the first week. The wall by the door has been ready since the building went up. Nothing in this job has been waiting on preparation for a long time now.

What you've been waiting on is finished, which is a different word entirely. Finished means fourteen pegs, a labeled board, a habit formed across a whole workshop, and nobody arguing with it. Finished is months away and partly out of your hands, and you've been treating it as the price of starting.

You are ready now, and ready has never meant finished. Scripture sends people out mid-journey rather than mid-ceremony, and the Holy Spirit supplies the next part of the work while the work is already moving.

Put the two words back where they belong and the wall by the door looks different. One peg is not a compromise on the finished version. It's the first true sentence of it.

The Envelope Has Been Doing Somebody Else's Job

There is one more thing worth noticing about that envelope, and it is not flattering to the wall.

For six months the drawing in your coat pocket has been standing in for the board. When somebody asks about the tool cage you describe the layout. When you think about the job you picture fourteen hooks. The envelope has become the place where the work exists, which is a comfortable arrangement and a completely private one.

A plan that only ever lives on paper cannot be corrected. Nobody can look at it and say the third hook is in the wrong place, because nobody has seen it. So the drawing stays perfect, and the wall stays bare, and both of those facts are the same fact.

You are holding a plan that cannot be improved, because a plan nobody can see cannot be corrected. Scripture puts God's work into hands that are actually moving rather than into intentions, and the Holy Spirit works through a correction offered by somebody standing beside you.

Who Has Despised the Day of Small Beginnings

There's a question in Zechariah that lands directly on an envelope in a coat pocket. It is a question rather than a statement, and it is aimed at everyone standing around a half-built thing feeling embarrassed by its size.

> For who hath despised the day of small things? for they shall rejoice, and shall see the plummet in the hand of Zerubbabel with those seven; they are the eyes of the LORD, which run to and fro through the whole earth. > Zechariah 4:10 (KJV)

A plummet is a weighted line for checking that a wall is straight. It's about as ordinary a piece of equipment as a building site has. What the verse says is that God's own attention rests on the hand holding it.

Sit with the size of that. Not the finished wall. Not the opening ceremony. A working hand, a plain tool, a job in progress, and the eyes of the Lord running through the whole earth and resting there.

You are not too small to be looked at, and your first peg is not beneath God's attention. The written Word refuses to despise a small beginning, and the Holy Spirit is present in a four-minute job by a door.

Declare this over yourself

You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so what follows is not a claim made out of your own authority. It is agreement, said back to God in His own words, while the Holy Spirit carries it. How He orders the rest of it is His to decide, and He answers in His own way and in His own time.

Spoken by somebody already secured, and the securing was finished before this morning began. Whether anybody uses the board is God's business rather than yours.

No unveiling was ever scheduled, and I stop standing about waiting for one. The written Word of God asks who has despised a small beginning, which settles whether four minutes by the door are worth spending. I put down the enlarged version of this job that grew in my head and was never handed to me. The Holy Spirit is in those four minutes already, ahead of me rather than behind me, and He is not measuring the size of anything. I keep to the sentence I was actually given and to everyone I actually answer to. A reversible step is mine to take today. I open my hand, and adoption and every result after it belong to God.
