Permission GrantedEphesians 2:10

The Name Cards in Her Coat Pocket

This message is for release from waiting on a ceremonial blessing before opening a small listening circle already inside the care she was given, without making attendance the proof

For the woman with the cards written, the chairs available and nobody coming to bless it.

There are eleven of them, folded once down the middle so they'll stand on a table. You wrote them in blue marker at your own kitchen table in the spring. The corners have gone soft because they've been in the same coat pocket ever since, through a wet March and most of a summer.

Eleven names, because eleven is how many people you can actually hear properly in an hour and a half without anybody leaving unheard. You worked that out carefully. You've been in enough rooms where twenty people came and four of them spoke.

The room is available on Thursday evenings. The chairs are in the cupboard. The woman who looks after the building told you in February to use it whenever it's free, and she meant it, and you've thanked her twice for something you've never once done.

You aren't short of permission, you're short of an occasion, and only one of those was ever promised to you. Scripture hands ordinary work to ordinary people without any occasion at all, and the Holy Spirit is already at work in the eleven names in your pocket.

The Name Cards in Her Coat Pocket

What You've Been Calling Not Yet

Say plainly what you've been telling yourself, because it's been said so quietly and so often that it's stopped sounding like a sentence.

Not yet. Not until somebody mentions it first. Not until it comes up naturally in a meeting, where somebody else says it would be good if we had a circle like that. Then you could say you'd already thought about it, and the whole idea would arrive without you having put yourself anywhere.

That sentence has a job, and the job isn't humility. It's protection. As long as the circle hasn't started, it can't be the wrong idea, it can't be poorly attended, and nobody has to form a view about whether you're the person to run it.

You aren't waiting for a better moment, you're keeping something safe by keeping it unborn. The written Word settles who you are in Christ before a single person walks into a room, and the Holy Spirit doesn't measure a woman by how many chairs get filled.

That's not a scolding. Protecting a good idea is what a person does when the idea matters and they've been hurt before, and you have been.

The Attendance You Were Never Asked to Produce

Here's the number that's been sitting on your chest without ever being written down. How many have to come before it counts?

You've never set it and you've never needed to, because the fear doesn't work that way. The fear simply knows that three would be embarrassing, that four is the kind of number people mention afterward, and that eleven empty chairs in a room with four people in it looks like something.

Look at what you were actually given, though. A room on a Thursday evening, and a woman saying use it whenever it's free. Not a target, not a review, and not a single word about how many.

You were given a room to open, not a room to fill. Scripture measures a servant by faithfulness rather than by attendance, and the Holy Spirit is the One who brings whoever is meant to be sitting there.

If three come, three get listened to for ninety minutes, which is three more than are being listened to on Thursdays now. A small room is not a failed room. It's the room that turned up.

The Year You Have Already Spent

Count what the waiting has cost so far, because it's easy to imagine that not starting is the cheap option.

Seven months of Thursdays have gone by since the cards went into your pocket. Thirty of them, more or less, each one a room standing empty and a coat pocket with eleven names in it. That isn't a tragedy and nobody was harmed, but it also isn't free, and it's worth naming honestly rather than leaving it in the dark.

Here's the part the fear never mentions. The circle that didn't happen also can't be judged, can't disappoint anybody, and can't be poorly attended. Safety has been the whole benefit, and safety has been the whole cost.

You are paying in Thursdays for a protection you never actually needed. The written Word gives you a standing that a poorly attended evening cannot touch, and the Holy Spirit is not keeping score of chairs.

That's not said to shame you. It's said because a person deserves to see both columns before they decide, and you've only ever been shown one.

What Eleven Cards Already Prove

Take the cards out of your pocket and look at what they are, because they're evidence about you and you've never read them that way.

They're in your handwriting. You bought the marker. You folded them so they'd stand. You picked eleven, not twenty, because you'd already thought about what happens to the quiet ones in a big group, which means you'd already thought about the people before you'd thought about yourself.

That's not somebody hoping to be given a ministry. That's somebody already doing one in the kitchen at their own table, months before any room opened. The preparation you did in the spring is the work, and it happened without permission because it never needed any.

You began this months ago at your own table, and nobody signed off on that either. The written Word calls you God's workmanship, prepared for good works ahead of time, and the Holy Spirit has been in the preparing as surely as He'll be in the room.

Prepared Beforehand for You to Walk In

There's a sentence in Ephesians that takes the permission question and closes it in a tense nobody can reopen.

> For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them. > Ephesians 2:10 (KJV)

Before ordained. The preparing is finished and it was finished by God, not by the woman who runs the building and not by whoever might have mentioned it in a meeting. What's left for you is the walking, which is a plain act that a person does with their own feet on a Thursday.

Look again at the eleven cards through that sentence. They aren't a proposal awaiting a decision. They're what walking looks like when a woman has already started and hasn't yet noticed that she started.

You are walking in something finished, not applying for something pending. The written Word puts the preparing in the past tense and hands you the walking, and the Holy Spirit supplies what the walking needs as you go.

Declare this over yourself

You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so what follows is not a claim made out of your own authority. It is agreement, said back to God in His own words, while the Holy Spirit carries it. How He orders the rest of it is His to decide, and He answers in His own way and in His own time.

Said by a woman already brought near, out of a nearness given outright. Who comes on Thursday, and how many, is God's concern rather than hers.

A blessing was given before I thought to ask for it, and I am not waiting on a second one. The written Word of God calls me His workmanship, made in Christ Jesus for good works prepared beforehand, so the permission question closed without me in the room. Attendance was never the proof of whether I should have begun. The Holy Spirit is in that room already, going before me rather than following. I keep every boundary I was actually given and every authority I actually serve. Eleven names in my own handwriting are mine to set out. I open my hand, and the room and the number are God's.
