For the writer with a finished piece of music and a silent message thread she keeps checking.
Nobody in your life has ever agreed to be your green light. Not one person. There's no arrangement, no promise, no conversation where somebody said they'd let you know when you were ready, and yet you've been waiting on exactly that for about two years.
The piece has been finished since February. It's on your phone in one take, with a dropped chord partway through and a dog barking somewhere near the end, and it is by some distance the truest thing you've written. You have gone back to it maybe sixty times.
The message thread is still open on your screen. Her name, three messages from you about nothing much, and no file attached to any of them. You've typed the words here's a thing I wrote at least a dozen times. You've never once pressed send.
You aren't waiting for an answer, you're waiting for a question nobody was ever asked. Scripture never makes a person's calling depend on another person's verdict, and the Holy Spirit doesn't route His work through somebody else's inbox.

Who You Actually Appointed, and When
Try to find the moment she became the one who decides. You won't, because it never happened in the ordinary way that appointments happen.
What happened was smaller and much stranger. She said something kind about a chorus of yours, years ago, at a time when you badly needed somebody to say something kind. Her words landed with the weight of a verdict because you were standing in a place where any word at all would have weighed that much.
She has no idea. If you told her today that she'd been holding the release valve on your writing since a Tuesday in 2023, she'd be horrified and she'd be right to be. Nobody asked her. She was simply the last person who said a kind word before the waiting started.
You have handed a verdict to somebody who never agreed to give one. The written Word settles your standing in Christ rather than leaving it in the hands of the nearest kind person, and the Holy Spirit gives the assurance you've been hoping a message would carry.
That's worth sitting with rather than rushing past. You didn't do something foolish. You did what a person does when they need one voice and only one voice is available, and then the arrangement outlived the season that made it sensible.
What That Recording Was Made For
Here's a question that changes the shape of the whole wait. What did you write it for?
Not to be assessed. You've never once pictured her marking it. You pictured her hearing it in the car and going quiet, because that's what happens to her when something lands, and you wanted it to land on somebody the way it landed on you at the kitchen table in February.
So the thing you're waiting for and the thing you actually want have almost nothing to do with each other. You're waiting for an evaluation. What you want is for one person to hear it. Those two arrive by completely different routes, and only one of them requires her to say anything at all.
You're free to give the music away without asking anyone to grade it. Scripture treats what God gives as a gift to be used rather than a submission to be approved, and the Holy Spirit is the One who carries a true word into somebody's chest.
Notice what this doesn't ask of you. It doesn't ask you to perform anywhere, put anything in front of strangers, or decide tonight what the music is worth. One file, one person, one message thread that is already open.
What Two Years Does to a Finished Piece
There's a cost to the waiting you may not have counted, and it isn't the cost you're braced for.
You're braced for the cost of sending it. She might not reply for four days. She might reply with something warm and generic that tells you nothing. She might say the second verse doesn't work, which you already know, because you were there when the chord dropped.
The cost you haven't counted is what two years does to a finished piece inside a person. It stops being music and starts being a test case. Every month it sits there it gathers more of your hope, until a two-minute recording with a dog in it is carrying a weight no two-minute recording was ever built to carry.
You're protecting the music by slowly crushing it under what you need it to prove. The written Word takes the weight of your worth off your work entirely, and the Holy Spirit holds what you can't hold while you simply write the next one.
The way out isn't to care less. It's to let the music be music again, which happens about ninety seconds after somebody else has heard it.
Called According to His Own Purpose
There's a sentence in Paul's second letter to Timothy that cuts the cord you've been holding, and it does it by naming where a calling actually comes from.
> Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began, > 2 Timothy 1:9 (KJV)
Before the world began. That's the timestamp on it. Whatever God put in you was given at a point you can't reach, by a purpose that isn't yours, and it was settled long before anybody with a kind word walked into your life.
Look at what that does to a silent message thread. It can't confirm what was decided before the world began, because nothing said in a thread is old enough or big enough to reach that decision. Her silence isn't a verdict. It's a woman who's busy, who has no idea she's holding anything, and who was never the author of this.
You were called before anyone alive was in a position to have an opinion. The written Word puts your calling in God's own purpose rather than in anybody's assessment, and the Holy Spirit makes that settled thing live in you today.
Before anyone alive is not a figure of speech in that verse. It is the actual sequence.
Declare this over yourself
You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so what follows is not a claim made out of your own authority. It is agreement, said back to God in His own words, while the Holy Spirit carries it. How He orders the rest of it is His to decide, and He answers in His own way and in His own time.
Said by a woman already covered, not by one hoping to be. What her friend says, and whether she says anything, is God's.
Nobody ever installed a green light on my wall, and I stop watching for one to come on. The written Word of God says I was called with a holy calling according to His own purpose and grace, given in Christ before the world began, and no silence reaches back far enough to overturn that. One kind person is not the keeper of my permission, and she never agreed to be. The Holy Spirit is already carrying what is true in this music, out ahead of me rather than trailing behind. I take my worth off a recording and put it back where it was always held. I stay kind to a friend who never knew what she was carrying. I open my hand, and the sending and the silence are God's.
