The Handoff Cards in the Map Drawer

This message is for to finish one useful handoff card again after being called controlling, without reopening the speaker's case or building a system nobody else can revise

For the organizer who stopped writing clear instructions after one word landed on her, and has written none since.

Suppose a woman keeps a shallow map drawer in a shared workroom, and in the back of it, under the folded site plans, there are nineteen index cards in her handwriting.

Each card does one job. Who hands over what, to whom, in what order, and what the next person needs to know before they start. They're written in short lines with a box to tick, because she noticed years ago that nobody reads a paragraph while they're holding a ladder.

They were good. People used them without noticing they were using them, which is the highest compliment that kind of work ever receives. She hasn't written one since a Tuesday in the spring, when somebody in a meeting described her approach as a bit controlling.

A word landed on your work and you took it as a description of you, and it was neither accurate nor a description. Scripture says the Spirit gives what He gives for the common good, and the Holy Spirit has not withdrawn a gift because one person reached for an ugly word in a meeting.

The Handoff Cards in the Map Drawer

What That Word Actually Did

That word, controlling, is a heavy one and it's almost impossible to answer. That's what makes it so effective, and it's why you've been carrying it around since April.

If somebody had said the cards were too long, you'd have shortened them. If they'd said the boxes were unnecessary, you'd have argued the point or dropped them. Both of those are about cards, and cards can be revised.

Controlling isn't about cards. It's about a person, and the only available defenses make it worse, because a woman explaining at length why she isn't controlling sounds exactly like what she's been accused of being. So you said nothing, and then you stopped writing them, which was the only move available that didn't require a speech.

You were never told the cards were wrong, you were told something about yourself, and the two were quietly swapped. The written Word says the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the profit of everybody, and the Holy Spirit does not hand out gifts on condition that nobody misnames them.

That swap is worth naming plainly, because once you see it, the whole thing gets smaller. There's a card question and there's a character question, and only one of them was ever on the table.

What Card Number Twenty Actually Costs

Here's the actual price of writing card number twenty, and it's worth hearing in full, because you've been assuming a far steeper one.

Naming who said it is not required. Ruling on what they meant is not required. You don't have to raise it with them, be reconciled first, or wait for a day when somebody works out what one word did to five months of work.

Forgiveness is real work, and God does it in a person at His own pace. It is not a condition attached to a pen. Nobody has to be squared away before you write down who carries the key on Saturday.

Nineteen cards can go back into use today with nothing settled and nobody spoken to. Scripture makes your gift a matter between you and God rather than a matter of one word in a meeting, while the Holy Spirit waits on no conversation that may never happen.

Nothing about this has ever been in somebody else's keeping. It is a drawer, a pen, and twenty minutes.

The Test That Keeps This Honest

There is a real question buried inside that ugly word, and it's worth answering, because answering it frees you rather than convicting you.

The question is whether an instruction leaves room for the person holding it. A card that says who carries the key is help. A card that says who carries the key, in which hand, and forbids anybody to suggest otherwise is something else, and you've never written one of those in your life.

So here's a test you can apply without anybody's permission. Can the next person cross a line out and write a better one? If yes, the card is a gift. If no, the card is a fence, and a fence needs rewriting.

You can hold your own work to a plain standard without holding yourself in the dock. The written Word measures a gift by whether it serves others rather than by whether it goes unchallenged, and the Holy Spirit will correct a willing woman without ever accusing her.

Every card in that drawer passes the test. Somebody could take a pen to any of them. That's what makes them instructions rather than control, and it always was.

There is a second piece of evidence sitting in that drawer, and it is in the handwriting. Nineteen cards and not one of them is laminated. You could have sealed them and made them permanent, and a person who wanted the last word would have.

You left them as paper, in pencil, on card that takes a correction. That was a decision about other people, made four years before anybody accused you of anything, and it answers the accusation better than any argument would.

Given to Every Man to Profit Withal

There's a line in the first letter to the Corinthians that says what a gift is for, and it settles the accusation you've been carrying without ever arguing with it.

> But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal. > 1 Corinthians 12:7 (KJV)

To profit withal means for the good of everybody. That's the purpose written into the gift itself, by the One who gave it, before anybody in a meeting had an opinion about your handwriting.

Read what that does to the word controlling. A gift given for the common good, used for the common good, by a woman whose cards let a volunteer find the key on a Saturday, is doing exactly what it was handed over to do. The purpose is in the gift. It doesn't have to be defended, because it was never yours to justify.

You were given this for other people from the start, and you are still holding it for them. The written Word says the Spirit gives for the profit of all, and the Holy Spirit keeps that purpose alive in you whatever anybody once called it.

Which makes the drawer the odd part of the arrangement, not the cards.

Nineteen cards in a drawer are still nineteen cards written for other people.

Declare this over yourself

You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so what follows is not a claim made out of your own authority. It is agreement, said back to God in His own words, while the Holy Spirit carries it. How He orders the rest of it is His to decide, and He answers in His own way and in His own time.

Spoken by somebody already brought near, from a nearness given outright. What becomes of the cards, and who uses them, rests with God.

What He gave me is still mine, and it was aimed at other people from the start. The written Word of God says the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every person for the profit of all, which settles the purpose without any help from a meeting. A heavy word was laid on me rather than on my work, and the two were quietly swapped. The Holy Spirit has kept this alive through every month I called it finished, and He goes before me. I write what helps the next person and leave room on every card for them to correct me. Nothing has to be named or settled with whoever used that word. I lift my hands, and the drawer is God's.
