The Watercolor Beneath the Trail Maps

This message is for to uncover an abandoned field painting gift again without reopening the old sentence that led to covering it

For the man who painted what he saw on the ridge until somebody made it sound like an indulgence.

Imagine a man with a canvas satchel that goes out with him every time he works the upper trails. Water bottle, tape, a folding saw, two spare markers, and a roll of laminated maps that live in the long pocket.

Underneath those maps, flat against the back panel, there's a block of watercolor paper about the size of a paperback, a tin the size of a phone, and a brush with a cap on it. He's carried that up the hill perhaps four hundred times.

He hasn't opened it in seven years. It goes up, it comes down, it stays under the maps. He could not honestly tell you why it's still in the bag, except that taking it out would require a decision and leaving it there requires nothing.

Something you keep carrying is something you have not put down, whatever the maps on top of it suggest. Scripture says the gifts and calling of God come without recall, and the Holy Spirit has kept something alive in you that a satchel has been quietly reporting for seven years.

The Watercolor Beneath the Trail Maps

What the Sentence Reached

You remember roughly what was said, and you remember exactly how it felt, which is the usual order for this kind of thing.

It wasn't about the painting. Nobody had looked properly at the painting. It was a remark about a grown man sitting on a rock with a paintbox while there was work to be done, delivered lightly, probably by somebody who was tired and meant nothing much by it.

That kind of sentence can't be answered. A defense of twenty minutes on a rock sounds exactly like a man defending twenty minutes on a rock. So you didn't defend it. You put the block under the maps and went back to the markers, and the satchel has gone up the hill four hundred times since.

You were never told your work was poor, you were told your time was indulgent. The written Word ties what God gives to His own calling rather than to somebody's view of your afternoon, and the Holy Spirit does not hand out gifts on condition that they look productive.

Notice what you did with it, though. You kept it in the bag. A man who accepted that verdict would have taken it out the same week and put it in a drawer at home.

What Getting the Block Out Costs

Here's the actual price of getting the block out from under the maps, and it's shorter than you've been assuming.

Establishing who said it is not the price of this. Deciding what they meant is not the price either. You don't have to raise it, be at peace about it first, or wait for a day when somebody understands what one light sentence did to seven years of ridges.

Forgiveness will come in God's own hour, by a road He chooses. No toll stands between you and twenty minutes on a rock. Nobody needs dealing with before you sit down with a brush.

The paints can come out this week with nothing settled and nobody spoken to. Scripture makes your gift a matter between you and God rather than a matter of one remark on a hillside, while the Holy Spirit waits on no conversation that may never happen.

Nobody else has ever had a hand on this. It is a satchel, a roll of maps, and twenty minutes on the way down.

What the Twenty Minutes Was Doing

There's an honest answer to that sentence, and it's worth saying once, because you've half believed it for seven years.

You were never painting instead of working. You were painting while the light did something on the far slope that it does about eleven times a year, and you happened to be the one man on that hill who could see it and had paper. Nobody paid you for the markers either, if it comes to that.

There's something else the twenty minutes did. You know that ridge better than anybody on the site, and you know it because you sat still on it. A man who has painted a slope has looked at it for half an hour, which is why you spot a slip on that bank before anybody else does.

Sitting still on the hill was never the opposite of the work, and it may have been the best part of it. The written Word calls the gifts of God irrevocable rather than conditional on being useful, and the Holy Spirit does not measure an afternoon by what it produces.

There is a practical version of that worth stating plainly. You spot the slip on the north bank before anybody else because you have looked at that slope for half an hour at a time, in different light, with a brush in your hand.

Nobody on the site would connect those two facts and nobody needs to. The seeing was trained by the sitting, and the sitting is the thing the remark called indulgent.

He Has Not Changed His Mind About This

There's a short sentence in Romans that closes this question more completely than we usually let it.

> For the gifts and calling of God are without repentance. > Romans 11:29 (KJV)

Without repentance means He does not revise the decision. God hands something over and does not afterward wish He had kept it. He does not watch a block of paper ride up a hill under a roll of maps for seven years and quietly withdraw the offer on grounds of disuse.

Look at what the sentence declines to add. There is no clause for people who wasted it, hid it, or stopped because somebody made it sound self-indulgent. The gift stands because the Giver does not reverse Himself, and one sentence on a hillside never came near the mechanism.

You have not lost it, He has not taken it back, and He is not currently reconsidering. The written Word calls His gifts and calling irrevocable, and the Holy Spirit keeps what He gave whatever a satchel has been carrying in silence.

Declare this over yourself

You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so what follows is not a claim made out of your own authority. It is agreement, said back to God in His own words, while the Holy Spirit carries it. How He orders the rest of it is His to decide, and He answers in His own way and in His own time.

Spoken by somebody already secured, and the securing was finished before this morning. What he paints, and whether anybody sees it, is God's.

What He gave me has not been taken back, and no second thought is under way. The written Word of God says the gifts and calling of God are without repentance, so one light sentence on a hillside never reached Him. Twenty minutes on a rock owes nobody an account of itself. The Holy Spirit has kept this alive through every year I called it finished, and He is out ahead of me. I refuse the remark that made a man with a brush sound self-indulgent. Nothing has to be named or settled with whoever made it. I lift my hands, and the block under the maps is God's.
