For the person who covered the camera years ago and has kept the cloth in place ever since.
You still know where it is. Second shelf, left side, under the folded linen you use for the courtyard table when people come. You could put your hand on it in the dark.
You also know it needs a battery, that there are forty or fifty frames on the card from a morning you can still describe, and that the strap is the brown one that cracked at the buckle. None of that has ever slipped your mind in seven years, which is itself worth noticing.
People who genuinely stop caring forget where the thing is. They lend it out and don't chase it. You've moved house since then and the camera came with you, wrapped in the same cloth, in a box you labeled yourself.
A gift you can still describe in detail is not a gift you have lost, whatever the cloth over it suggests. Scripture says the gifts and calling of God come without recall, and the Holy Spirit has been keeping this alive in you through every year you called it finished.

The Sentence and What It Actually Did
It was short. That's the part nobody believes about sentences like this one. It wasn't a speech and it wasn't cruel in any way you could report to anybody, which is exactly why it went in so cleanly.
Whoever said it was probably tired. They may have been unhappy about something else entirely. They almost certainly haven't remembered it once since, and if you described it to them today they'd be baffled, because a person rarely knows which of their sentences turned out to be load-bearing in somebody else's life.
Here's what it actually did. It didn't tell you that you were bad at this. It told you the whole activity was a bit much, slightly self-important, not really the sort of thing a serious person spends a Saturday on. A charge of being too much is much harder to answer than a charge of being no good.
You were never told you lacked the gift, you were told the gift was embarrassing. The written Word ties what God gives to His own calling rather than to anybody's tone, and the Holy Spirit does not hand His gifts out on the condition that nobody finds them excessive.
Once you see the shape of the charge, you can see why the cloth went on so fast. There was nothing in it to argue with. You can defend your competence. You can't defend yourself against a shrug.
The Price of Lifting the Linen
Let's be exact about the price of picking it up, because you've been quietly assuming it's far higher than it is.
Working out who said it is not required of you. Deciding whether they meant harm is not required either. You don't have to raise it, or have a conversation that clears the air, or wait for the day they realize what a passing remark did to seven years of Saturdays.
Forgiveness matters, and it comes the way God brings it, at an hour He picks. It is not a barrier you must clear in order to load a battery. Nobody has to be dealt with before you photograph a courtyard in the late afternoon.
You are free to take this up today without settling one thing about the person who set it down. Scripture makes your gift a matter between you and God rather than a matter of somebody else's approval, and the Holy Spirit isn't waiting on a conversation that may never take place.
That's worth reading twice, because you've built a fairly heavy door here and then assumed the key was in somebody else's pocket. It never was.
The Fear That the First One Will Be Bad
There's a second weight under that linen, and it has nothing to do with the sentence. It's the first photograph.
Seven years is long enough for your hands to have forgotten what they knew. You'll pick it up, the settings will be wrong, the light will have moved, and the first frame will be flat and slightly out of focus. Then you'll be standing in a courtyard holding proof of what you already suspect, which is that whatever you had, you don't have now.
Look at what you're actually protecting there. Not the gift. The memory of the gift, kept in perfect condition by never being tested against a real afternoon.
You are keeping a gift safe by never letting it be measured, and safety is costing you the use of it. The written Word says God's gifts are given without recall rather than held on approval, and the Holy Spirit works with rusty hands as readily as with practiced ones.
The first one will be bad. That's not a risk, it's a certainty, and it's also completely uninteresting. The sixth one will be fine.
There is a reason the sixth one will be fine, and it is not talent. An eye does not leave a person. What leaves is the small physical fluency of holding a thing, and that comes back inside an afternoon because the hands are relearning rather than learning.
So the honest forecast is five bad frames and then your own work again. Five frames is about ninety seconds. Seven years have been protected by ninety seconds of discomfort that nobody but you will ever see.
Without Repentance Means Without Second Thoughts
There's a short line in Romans that closes this question with a completeness most of us have never let it have.
> For the gifts and calling of God are without repentance. > Romans 11:29 (KJV)
The phrase means without a change of mind. God does not hand something over and afterward think better of it. He does not hand a gift to a person and then, watching a cloth go over it for seven years, quietly withdraw the offer on the grounds of neglect.
Notice how little room that leaves. It does not say His gifts are usually reliable. It doesn't leave a clause for people who wasted them, hid them, or stopped out of embarrassment. The gift stands because the Giver does not reverse Himself, and your seven years never came near the mechanism.
What God gave you, He has not taken back, and He is not in the process of reconsidering. The written Word calls His gifts and calling irrevocable, and the Holy Spirit keeps what He gave without reference to how long the linen has been over it.
Declare this over yourself
You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so what follows is not a claim made out of your own authority. It is agreement, said back to God in His own words, while the Holy Spirit carries it. How He orders the rest of it is His to decide, and He answers in His own way and in His own time.
Said by a person already at home in Christ, out of a belonging that was handed over. What you do with this, and when, rests with God.
What He gave me has not been taken back, and He is not in the middle of reconsidering it. The written Word of God says the gifts and calling of God are without repentance, so one remark in a courtyard seven years ago never reached the mechanism. A cloth over a shelf is a cloth, not a verdict. The Holy Spirit kept this alive through every year I called it finished, and He goes before me. I refuse the sentence that made careful attention sound like too much. Nothing has to be named or settled with whoever spoke it. I lift my hands, and whatever follows is God's.
