For the steward who loads the cart to the same line every time and has never once asked why.
It's twenty to ten in the morning and the returns are already backed up because the drop box was full when you got in.
There's a scratch on the upright of that cart, about two thirds of the way up, put there years ago by somebody with a ruler and a sharp edge. You load a book to it and you stop. Every run, every morning, for seven years.
The cart takes another third comfortably. You have known that for years. Two more shelves would mean four trips instead of six on a morning like this one, and you have never once tried it.
Somebody told you, early on, that a cart loaded high tips on the ramp. That was true of a different cart, on a ramp that was replaced in 2019, and it has never been true of this one.
A fact about equipment that no longer exists is still deciding how you work. Scripture says stand fast in the liberty with which Christ has made us free, while the Holy Spirit is at work beside a book cart at twenty to ten.
The Larger Version of the Same Line
Be exact about it, because the cart is the small version and you know where the large one is.
There's a mark on your contribution to that place at about the same height. You reshelve, you process returns, you handle the drop box, and you fix the printer nobody else can fix. Everything below the line.
What you have never done is say what you think about how any of it runs. Not about the drop box, which is emptied at the wrong hours. Not about the cataloguing, which you understand better than two of the people doing it, and not about the Thursday arrangement that wastes about forty minutes a week.
Nobody has told you not to. Nobody has told you anything at all about that line, which is exactly how these lines work.
The same mark is on the cart and on what you allow yourself to contribute. The written Word tells you to stand fast in liberty rather than be entangled again, while the Holy Spirit does not cap what a man may bring at what he was told in his first year.
What Will Not Happen in This Message
There is a version of this that goes back through the staff room after somebody, and it is not coming.
It would name the pattern and the people. It would make a point about places that use somebody for seven years without ever asking them a question, which is a real pattern and one you could evidence.
It would also leave you heavier and still loading to the scratch. It would land on colleagues who inherited an arrangement and have never once examined it.
You can be released from a line without prosecuting anybody for it. Scripture rests your freedom on what Christ has done rather than on anybody noticing anything, while the Holy Spirit takes weight off a person instead of handing them more.
Nothing here asks you to raise it, make a point, or revisit seven years. The floor gets lighter, and nobody else has to move first.
Test the Small One First
Here's the practical part, and it is smaller than the thing you have been avoiding.
Load the cart past the scratch. This morning. Two more shelves, take it slowly at the ramp, and find out. It will either tip, in which case you will know something, or it will not, in which case you will also know something and you will save two trips.
That is not a metaphor and it is not a substitute. It is the same question in a form where the answer arrives in about ninety seconds, and a body that has tested one line is considerably more willing to test another.
Most people try to start with the large version. It is the wrong order. A hand that has loaded past a scratch and survived is a hand that can raise itself in a meeting about the drop box.
Test the line you can test in ninety seconds, and the larger one gets nearer. The written Word calls you to stand fast in liberty rather than to make a single large leap, while the Holy Spirit works through a cart on a ramp as readily as through a resolution.
What Freedom at That Cart Is Not
One further version of this goes wrong, and it is worth refusing ahead of time.
That version says you have been used, and now you will step up, get a title, run something, and be recognized for seven years at last. It measures freedom by scope.
That is not on offer. You might say what you think about the drop box and have it ignored. You might say it and be right and watch nothing change. You might decide you would rather shelve than sit in rooms.
All three are free. Freedom is what you are allowed to bring coming back under your own control.
You are free when the cap is yours, whatever you then do with it. Scripture ties liberty to Christ rather than to a position, while the Holy Spirit gives a freedom that is complete before anybody asks your view.
Be Not Entangled Again
There's a sentence in Galatians written to people who had been set free and were sliding back into an arrangement they had already been released from.
> Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage. > Galatians 5:1 (KJV)
Entangled again is the phrase for a man loading to a scratch. It assumes somebody who has already been set free and is somehow back inside the old arrangement, which is what happens when a caution outlives the equipment that made it sensible.
Notice the tense of the freeing as well. Christ hath made us free. Finished, completed, before you came in this morning. The instruction that follows is not to achieve freedom but to stand in it, which is a different and much lighter task.
You were made free in a completed act, and the instruction is to stand rather than to earn. The written Word puts the freeing in the past tense, while the Holy Spirit makes that standing possible on an ordinary Tuesday beside a cart.
So Tuesday does not need a decision about the mark. It needs a man loading a cart the way the cart can actually be loaded.
Declare this over yourself
You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so what follows is not a claim made out of your own authority. It is agreement, said back to God in His own words, while the Holy Spirit carries it. How He orders the rest of it is His to decide, and He answers in His own way and in His own time.
Say these as a man already claimed, out of a standing that was settled without an application. What he offers, and what is made of it, stays with God.
That limit is not mine and I do not live under it, and a mark somebody made on a shelf is not a description of what I am permitted to contribute. The written Word of God says stand fast in the liberty with which Christ has made me free, and be not entangled again with a yoke of bondage. I refuse the ruler mark and I refuse it without laying a charge against whoever put it there. The Holy Spirit is on this floor before I push anything, out ahead of me. The mark is off me, and I load that cart as a man it is off. Nothing has to grow and nobody has to notice for that to be true. My hand is up and touching nothing, and every shelf on that cart is God's.
