The Roofline Drawn at Seven Feet

For the carpenter whose pencil drops to the same line on every drawing without being told to.

There's a red line across the old survey sheet pinned under the glass on that drafting table, and every roof you have drawn in nine years crosses it at the same height.

Seven feet. You put the ruler on, you mark the eaves, and your hand goes to that line before your head has taken any part in it. Nine years, four owners, three different sites, and one number.

The line came from a planning condition on a site that is no longer a site. It expired, the land was sold, and the condition went with it. Nobody has mentioned seven feet to you since about 2017.

The sheet is still under the glass because it has other useful markings on it. You could not tell anybody why the line still governs a pencil.

A condition that expired eight years ago is still setting the height of everything you draw. Scripture says where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty, while the Holy Spirit is at work at a drafting table with an old survey under the glass.

When a Rule Becomes a Hand

Be exact about it, because this is not a belief and it will not be argued out of you.

You do not think a shelter has to be seven feet. If somebody asked you directly you would say it depends entirely on the site, the use, the fall of the ground and what the owner needs, and you would be right.

The trouble is that the rule stopped living in your head some years ago and moved into your hand. A belief can be corrected by an argument. A hand cannot, because the hand has already moved by the time the head arrives.

That is why nine years of knowing better has changed nothing at all about your drawings.

The rule left your head and moved into your hand, which is why knowing better has not helped. The written Word puts liberty where the Spirit of the Lord is rather than in an argument you have already won, while the Holy Spirit works on a hand as readily as on a mind.

The Survey Mark and Whoever Set It

There is a version of this that goes hunting for the origin of that mark, and it is not coming.

It would go back to the planning condition and the people who imposed it. It would make a case about authorities who set arbitrary numbers without ever thinking about the people working under them.

It would also leave you heavier and still at seven feet, and it would land on a planning office that made a reasonable decision about a site that no longer exists.

You can be released from a rule without prosecuting whoever wrote it. Scripture rests your liberty on the Spirit of the Lord rather than on anybody withdrawing anything, while the Holy Spirit lifts weight off a person instead of adding to it.

Nothing here asks you to raise it, or to revisit eight years, or to become somebody who resents planning offices. The drawing board gets lighter, and nobody else has to move first.

What Actually Interrupts a Hand

Here's the practical part, because a hand does not respond to a sermon and yours will not either.

You put something physical in the way. Take the survey sheet out from under the glass and put it in the drawer with the other old ones. Not because it is evil. Because a hand that has been using a line as a stop needs the line to not be there.

Then measure the next one from the ground up rather than from the eaves down. That single change means the pencil reaches the roof last rather than first, and a rule that lives in a first movement has nothing to attach itself to.

Neither of those is a resolution or a decision about height. They are two small mechanical interruptions, and they will do more in a week than nine years of knowing better has done.

A rule that lives in a hand is undone by changing the movement, not by winning the argument. The written Word locates liberty in the Spirit rather than in willpower, while the Holy Spirit meets a man at the level of what his hands actually do.

What Height Is Not Going to Prove

One more version of this goes wrong, and it is worth declining before somebody puts it in front of you.

That version says you have been building small, and now the roofs get higher, the work gets more ambitious, and the height of what you draw becomes the evidence that you are free.

That is not on offer. You might measure honestly and find that seven feet was right for this particular shelter, because sometimes an old number happens to fit.

That would still be free, because the number would have come from the ground rather than from a red line under glass. A man who measures honestly and draws seven feet has received the whole of this.

Freedom is where the number comes from, not how high it goes. Scripture puts liberty where the Spirit is rather than in scale, while the Holy Spirit gives a freedom that is complete before anything is drawn.
