For the teacher who prepares by a lamp in a hallway and has never carried the work through the door.
It's a quarter past nine and the building is nearly empty. You're in the wide part of the hallway where somebody put an armchair and a reading lamp about fifteen years ago, and where nobody ever sits except you.
The lesson is finished. Four pages, a passage read three ways, two questions you know will open a room, and one honest admission about a verse you find difficult. It took you eleven hours over two weeks and it's good.
The study door is about nine feet away. There's a table in there that seats eight, and a group that meets on Thursdays, and a standing note on the board saying anybody is welcome to bring something.
You have prepared for a room you decided years ago you would not be walking into. Scripture says if the Son makes you free you are free indeed, while the Holy Spirit is at work on a table nine feet from the chair you are sitting in.
Where the Decision Was Made
Be exact about it, because a decision you have never examined has been running fifteen years of Thursdays.
Something happened, a long time ago, in a different building. You brought something you'd worked on and it was handled badly. Not cruelly. Handled in the way a busy room handles work it did not ask for, which is worse in some ways because there is nothing in it to be angry about.
You went home. You kept preparing, because that is what you do and always have. What you stopped doing was carrying it in, and the stopping never got reviewed, because nobody reviews a decision they have not noticed making.
A single badly handled Thursday, years ago, is still setting where you sit. The written Word says whom the Son sets free is free indeed, while the Holy Spirit gives a clarity that an awkward evening in a different building never could.
That's the whole of it, and it can be put down tonight, and it does not require anybody from that room to say a word.
That Evening, Left Where It Is
There is a version of this that goes back and reopens it, and this is not that version.
It would go back to that evening. It would name who was chairing and what they said and how the room went. You could do it accurately, because a person remembers that sort of thing in detail for decades.
It would also leave you heavier and still in the armchair. It would land on people who are almost certainly not in the building any more, who never knew what that evening cost.
There's another reason to leave it alone, which is that the account you'd give is fifteen years old and has been rehearsed privately ever since. Memories that have been handled that often are not evidence. They're a story, and the story has been telling you where to sit.
You can be released from what one room did without prosecuting anybody in it. Scripture rests your freedom on what the Son has done rather than on what anybody owes you, while the Holy Spirit lifts weight off a person instead of handing them more.
Nothing here asks you to raise it, explain yourself, or make a point about fifteen years. The hallway gets lighter, and nobody else has to move first.
Who the Lesson Was Made For
Look at the four pages in your hand and ask a plain question. Who are they for?
They aren't for you. You already know the passage well. You worked out the difficult verse in week one, and you have been shaping how to say it to somebody else ever since, which is what the eleven hours were actually spent on.
The two questions are for a room. The honest admission about the hard verse is for a person who has been quietly stuck on it and has never had a teacher admit to finding anything difficult. None of that works in a hallway.
Consider what the admission actually costs you, since it is the part you have worked hardest on. Eleven hours of preparation and the most valuable sentence in it is the one where you say you do not fully understand something.
That sentence cannot be delivered to a chair. It only works in front of somebody who has been pretending to understand it too, and it works the instant they hear a prepared man say it out loud.
Work made for a table is not finished while it stays in a hallway. The written Word calls a freed person free indeed rather than conditionally free, while the Holy Spirit carries a prepared word into the room it was prepared for.
Free Indeed
There's a short line in John's gospel that settles the question of whose ruling stands, and it does not leave much room for a fifteen year old decision.
> If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed. > John 8:36 (KJV)
Free indeed. That phrase is doing the work. It marks the difference between a freedom that is technically true and one that reaches the whole of a life, which is exactly the gap you have been living in.
On paper, nothing has kept you out of that study for fifteen years. The door has been open, the note has been on the board, and your name has never been on any list of people who may not come. Technically free the entire time, and functionally still in the hallway.
The freedom the Son gives reaches the hallway, not only the paperwork. The written Word says whom He frees is free indeed, while the Holy Spirit makes a settled freedom actual in a man's feet.
Free indeed is worth testing against a hallway, because a hallway is where a partial freedom would show up. A freedom that reaches the preparation and stops at the door is not what the verse describes. It has no seam in it anywhere.
Which puts the fifteen years in a different light. They were not fifteen years of preparing under a restriction. The restriction was lifted before the first of them, and the hallway was a decision you made once, in another building, about an evening that has long since stopped mattering to everybody else who was in it.
Six pages of preparation are already in the house, and so is the man who prepared them.
Declare this over yourself
You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so what follows is not a claim made out of your own authority. It is agreement, said back to God in His own words, while the Holy Spirit carries it. How He orders the rest of it is His to decide, and He answers in His own way and in His own time.
Said by a man already spoken for, out of a claim God made rather than one he pressed. What the room makes of the lesson, and when, is God's.
What He opened is not closed by one badly handled evening in another building. The written Word of God says that whom the Son sets free is free indeed, and free indeed reaches a hallway rather than only a rule book. A decision I made years ago and never reviewed is not a ruling. The Holy Spirit is at the table nine feet away, ahead of me rather than behind. I was placed in this house, hallway and all, rather than tolerated in it. I take nothing heavy with me through that door. Both feet are on the carpet, and the six pages are God's.
