Fear Of VisibilityPsalm 34:5

The Porch Light Was Already On

This message is for courage for a person whose obstacle is exposure rather than ability, who arrives at doors she has been invited to and still rehearses her exit before she knocks

For the woman who is always welcome and always half convinced she has got the evening wrong.

The light was on before you turned into the road. That's the part you keep not noticing, and it has been true every single time.

You park a little way down, which you tell yourself is about the space. You walk up carrying a dish with a cloth over it, a notebook under your arm. Somewhere between the gate and the step you run the check. Is it tonight. Is it this house. Did she mean it, or was she being polite in a doorway.

By the time you knock you have a sentence prepared for the possibility that you have made a mistake, and a reason ready for leaving early, and you have never once needed either of them in eleven years.

Waiting outside a lit porch is not politeness and it is not patience, it is fear of being seen arriving, and fear is what this answers. Scripture says those who look to Him are lightened and their faces are not ashamed, and the Holy Spirit is not impatient with a woman who is frightened of walking into a lit room.

The Porch Light Was Already On

Naming What the Check Is For

Get the shape of it right, because the wrong name for a fear is most of what keeps it running.

You're not afraid of the people. You know them. You like several of them a great deal and one of them would drive across a county for you, which she has done.

The fear arrives at the moment of entry. A doorway is a moment when a room turns and looks, and for about two seconds you are the only thing anybody is attending to. What you are checking on the path is whether those two seconds are going to be the ones where somebody's face does something you can't unsee.

Your fear lives in the doorway, not in the evening. The written Word says those who looked to Him were lightened, and the Holy Spirit is at work in the two seconds you have been rehearsing since the gate.

That's worth naming precisely. You can manage a whole evening. You do it regularly and you're good company. What you cannot manage is the threshold, which is why you park down the road and take a slightly longer walk.

What the Rehearsal Is Buying

The preparation does something real, and it deserves an honest accounting rather than a scolding.

With the exit line ready, no arrival can fully trap you. If the room turns and something goes wrong in somebody's face, you have a sentence, you have a reason, you are out in four minutes with your dignity intact. That's a genuine protection. You built it carefully, probably a long time ago, probably for a good reason.

It's worth honoring that rather than scolding it. Somewhere behind this there is a doorway you walked into once where the room's face did do something, and you have been paying the insurance on that moment ever since. Nobody builds this kind of preparation for no reason at all.

Here's the other column. You have never arrived anywhere fully. Part of you has been at the door the whole evening, holding a sentence you don't need, which is why you're tired afterward in a way that a pleasant evening should not make anybody tired.

You have been paying the price of a bad arrival at every single arrival, including the good ones. Scripture ties your standing to the God you look to rather than to a room's first two seconds, and the Holy Spirit steadies a person at a threshold rather than pretending it is easy.

Nothing here asks you to stop preparing food, stop being considerate, or become a person who strides into rooms. It asks you to put the exit line down on the path.

Who Turned the Light On

Here is the fact you keep walking past, and it is worth stopping at.

Somebody turned that light on before you arrived. Not for the street. Not because it's dark. Because they knew what time you said and they wanted the path lit when you came up it. That is a small act and it took four seconds and it happened in every one of those eleven years.

There is also the matter of who invited whom. You have never once turned up uninvited anywhere. Every single one of these evenings began with somebody else asking, which means the question you run on the path was answered before you left your own house.

The welcome was decided before you arrived, and you have been re-deciding it at the gate. The written Word says those who look to Him are lightened and not ashamed, and the Holy Spirit keeps a settled thing settled while you walk up a path.

They Looked Unto Him and Were Lightened

There's a line in the thirty-fourth psalm that puts a face and a direction together, and it answers this exactly.

> They looked unto him, and were lightened: and their faces were not ashamed. > Psalm 34:5 (KJV)

Two motions in one sentence. They looked, which is a direction of attention. They were lightened, which is what happened to them as a result, and the word carries the sense of a face brightening.

Then the last clause, which is the one for a woman on a garden path. Their faces were not ashamed. Not their situations. Their faces, which is exactly where your fear lives, because a face is what a doorway exposes.

Looking to Him does something to a face before anybody in the room has seen it. The written Word says they looked, they were lightened, their faces were not ashamed, and the Holy Spirit does that work in the four steps between the gate and the door.

Notice the order in that verse, because it runs the opposite way to the one you have been using. You have been trying to get your face right before you knock. The verse has the looking come first and the face follow.

Which means those four steps between the gate and the door are not preparation time. They are the whole of the work, and the work is a direction of attention rather than an effort of composure. Nobody inside that house needs you to arrive composed. They need you to arrive.

Declare this over yourself

You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so what follows is not a claim made out of your own authority. It is agreement, said back to God in His own words, while the Holy Spirit carries it. How He orders the rest of it is His to decide, and He answers in His own way and in His own time.

Said by a woman already set inside the promise, not one knocking at its edge. What the room does in its first two seconds is God's.

I am not too much and I am not too little, and I am not re-deciding at a gate what was settled when somebody invited me. The written Word of God says they looked to Him and were lightened, and their faces were not ashamed, so my face is not the thing at risk here. Two seconds in a doorway cannot overturn a welcome. The Holy Spirit does His work in the four steps between the gate and the step, and He is on the path with me. My fear is real, it is not vanity, and it does not get to walk in ahead of me. His looking came before anybody else's ever could. I take one breath, and the whole arrival is God's.
