For the singer who arranges every part to stay under a line somebody pencilled years ago.
Your voice has not been measured since you were nineteen, and you have been living inside that measurement for most of your adult life.
There's a pencil mark on the wall above the keyboard in the spare room. You did not put it there. It came with the house, or with the keyboard, or with somebody's old teaching arrangement, and you have never known what it was for.
What it has come to mean is the top of what you can do. Not because anybody said so. Because a mark on a wall above a keyboard is exactly the shape of a limit, and yours needed somewhere to live.
The real limit was set in a room when you were nineteen, by somebody who said something about your range in the way people speak when they will not remember it by lunchtime.
A measurement taken once, in one season, is still setting every arrangement you write. Scripture says the Lord GOD has given me the tongue of the learned, while the Holy Spirit is at work above a keyboard in a spare room.

What Actually Happened at Nineteen
Be exact about it, because a sentence said in passing has been doing structural work for a long time.
Somebody with some authority described your voice and used a word about the top of it. Thin, or strained, or something near those. It was probably accurate about that afternoon, in that room, on a voice that was nineteen, untrained, and two hours into a rehearsal already.
What it was not was a permanent specification. Voices change. Technique changes them more. A nineteen year old voice and the one you have now are related but they are not the same instrument.
That distinction never got made, because nobody makes it, and so a description of one afternoon became a fact about you.
A description of one afternoon hardened into a specification of your instrument. The written Word says God gives the tongue of the learned rather than leaving a voice to somebody's assessment, while the Holy Spirit works in an instrument no one has properly heard since.
The Room at Nineteen, Left Closed
There is a version of this that goes back into that room, and it is not coming.
It would go back to that room. It would say what ought to be said about handing a nineteen year old a verdict, which is a fair point and would be satisfying for about four minutes.
It would also leave you heavier and still writing under the line. It would land on somebody who was tired at the end of a long afternoon and has genuinely never thought about it since.
You can be released from a measurement without prosecuting whoever took it. Scripture rests your freedom on what God has given rather than on anybody withdrawing anything, while the Holy Spirit lifts weight off a person instead of adding to it.
Nothing here asks you to raise it, find anybody, or revisit that year. The spare room gets lighter, and nobody else has to move first.
What Freedom Is Not Promising About Your Range
There is another version of this that goes wrong, and it should be declined before it gets here.
That version says you have been working under your ability, and that now the ceiling comes off, the range opens up, and something follows. Larger rooms. More people. The thing you might have been.
That is not on offer. You might find the note is genuinely not there, because ranges are real and not everybody has every note, and that would be a plain fact rather than a verdict.
You might find it is there and decide you would rather keep writing where you are comfortable. You might find it, use it once, and never need it again.
All three are free. Freedom is finding out honestly, rather than arranging your whole musical life around a sentence somebody said when you were nineteen.
Freedom here is an honest measurement, not a higher note. The written Word puts the voice in God's giving rather than in your reach, while the Holy Spirit gives a freedom that is complete whatever that voice turns out to do.
A woman who tests it, finds the note is not there, and writes exactly the arrangements she has always written, has received the whole of this.
The Tongue of the Learned
There's a line in Isaiah about where a capable voice comes from, and it moves the question of range entirely.
> The Lord GOD hath given me the tongue of the learned, that I should know how to speak a word in season to him that is weary: he wakeneth morning by morning, he wakeneth mine ear to hear as the learned. > Isaiah 50:4 (KJV)
Hath given. That is the grammar of it. The capable voice is not something the prophet worked up to, reached for, or achieved by developing an instrument. It was handed to him by God.
Which means the question of what you can reach is not the question the verse is interested in. A voice God gives arrives with whatever it needs for the word it is meant to carry, and a note forced out of a range a person does not have was never carrying that word anyway.
Notice what the verse says the voice is for. A word in season to somebody who is weary. Not a wider range, not a fuller tone, and nothing at all about the top of it.
The voice is given rather than reached for. The written Word says the Lord GOD has given it, while the Holy Spirit wakens an ear morning by morning without reference to a pencil mark on a wall.
It is worth sitting with what that does to the practice hour. If the voice is given, then the hour stops being an audition and becomes an ordinary morning of finding out what is there.
An audition has a verdict at the end of it. A morning of finding out has a result, which is a different kind of thing entirely: a note is either available today or it is not, and either answer is information rather than judgment.
That is what has been missing above that keyboard for years. Not range. A way of looking at the top of your voice that does not have a pencil mark in it.
A pencil mark is not a measuring instrument, whatever it has been standing in for since you moved into that house.
Declare this over yourself
You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so what follows is not a claim made out of your own authority. It is agreement, said back to God in His own words, while the Holy Spirit carries it. How He orders the rest of it is His to decide, and He answers in His own way and in His own time.
Say these as a woman already held, out of a security that came to her as a gift. What her voice turns out to do, and where it is ever heard, stays with God.
That limit is not mine and I do not live under it, and a description of one tired afternoon when I was nineteen is not a specification of my instrument. The written Word of God says the Lord GOD has given me the tongue of the learned, which makes a capable voice a gift rather than a reach. I refuse the mark above the keyboard, and I refuse it without laying a charge against whoever first measured me. The Holy Spirit is in this room already, out ahead of me. The mark is off my voice, and I use it as somebody it is off. Nothing has to open up, and no room has to get bigger, for that to be true. My hand is up and touching nothing, and every note I have is God's.
