For the man who is welcome to fix anything and has never once been asked what he thinks.
What exactly are you allowed to do in that building?
Anything with your hands. That's the honest answer and everybody would agree with it. Hinges, the boiler cupboard door, the leak in the back room that two contractors said was the roof and was actually a downpipe. You have been the answer to about four hundred problems in eleven years.
Above the bench there's a nail hole where a rota used to hang. The rota moved to the office around 2018 and the hole is still there, at eye level, and you look at it most weeks without thinking about why.
What you have never done is say what you think should happen. Not about the building, which you know better than anybody, and not about anything else either. You mend, and you go home, and that has been the shape of it since the start.
Somebody drew a line between your hands and your judgment, and the line is still holding. Scripture says stand fast in the liberty with which Christ has made us free, while the Holy Spirit is at work in a man who knows that building better than the people who decide about it.

Where the Line Got Drawn
Be exact about it, because eleven years is a long time to obey something nobody wrote down.
It was not one event. It was a pattern. Early on you offered a view about something, twice, and both times the conversation was polite and then carried on without your point in it. Not rudely. It simply did not land, and nobody noticed that it had not landed.
Somewhere in there you worked out the arrangement. Your hands are wanted. Your judgment is a bonus that nobody has asked for. So you stopped offering it, which was a sensible response to two conversations and became an architecture over eleven years.
Nobody enforces it now. Half the people in that building arrived after you did. Several of them assume you are on the committee, because you are there more than anybody who is, and one of them asked you last spring what the committee had decided about the door.
A pattern from two early conversations has been running for eleven years without an enforcer. The written Word tells you to stand fast in liberty rather than be entangled again, while the Holy Spirit does not divide a man into a useful half and a silent one.
The Man Who Drew the Line, Left Where He Is
There is a version of this that goes and finds him, and it is not coming.
It would name the pattern and the people. It would point out what it costs a place when the man who knows the fabric best is never asked, which is true and which you could evidence.
It would also leave you heavier and still at the bench, and it would land on people who never made a decision about you, because a thing that happens by drift has no author to accuse.
You can be released from a line without prosecuting anybody for drawing it. Scripture rests your freedom on what Christ has done rather than on anybody acknowledging anything, while the Holy Spirit takes weight off a man instead of handing him more.
Nothing here asks you to raise it, or to make a point, or to revisit eleven years. The workshop gets lighter, and nobody else has to move first.
What Freedom at That Bench Is Not
There is another reading of this that goes wrong, and it should be refused before anybody hands it over.
That version says you have been overlooked, and that now you will step up, take a role, get on the committee, and be recognized at last. It measures freedom by position.
That is not on offer and it would be a poor exchange anyway. You might say what you think about the downpipe and have it ignored again. You might say it and be right and have somebody else say it back to you in a meeting as their own. You might decide you would rather mend than sit in rooms, which is a perfectly good decision made freely.
All three are free. Freedom is your judgment coming back under your own control. What anybody does with it afterward is a separate matter and proves nothing.
You are free when the judgment is yours again, whatever you then decide to do with it. The written Word ties liberty to Christ rather than to a position, while the Holy Spirit gives a freedom that is complete before anybody asks your opinion.
A man who is free and stays exactly where he is, at the same bench, saying nothing in meetings because he does not want to be in meetings, has received the whole of this.
Be Not Entangled Again
There's a sentence in Galatians written to people who had been set free and were sliding back into an arrangement they had already been released from.
> Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage. > Galatians 5:1 (KJV)
A yoke is worth stopping on, because of what a yoke actually does. It does not stop an animal moving. It fixes what an animal is for. A yoked ox can walk all day and it can only pull, and that is precisely the shape of eleven years at a bench.
The instruction is not to work harder inside the yoke. It is to stand fast in a liberty that already exists, and the freeing is written in the past tense. Christ hath made us free. Finished, before you got to the bench this morning.
A yoke fixes what you are for, and Christ has already taken it off. The written Word puts the freeing in the past tense, while the Holy Spirit makes that standing possible in an ordinary building on an ordinary week.
A yoke is worth picturing properly, because it is not a chain. It is a shaped piece of wood that tells an animal which direction it may pull and how far. Nothing about it is cruel and nothing about it is locked. It simply fixes the range.
That is exactly what the old line did, and exactly what Christ took off.
Declare this over yourself
You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so what follows is not a claim made out of your own authority. It is agreement, said back to God in His own words, while the Holy Spirit carries it. How He orders the rest of it is His to decide, and He answers in His own way and in His own time.
Say these as a man already secured, out of a standing that came to him as a gift. What is done with anything he suggests stays with God.
That limit is not mine and I do not live under it, and a line drawn around what I was allowed to do is not a description of what I am. The written Word of God says stand fast in the liberty with which Christ has made me free, and be not entangled again with a yoke of bondage. I refuse the old division between mending and contributing. The Holy Spirit is at this bench before I pick anything up, out ahead of me. The old division is over, and I stand at that bench as a man it is over for. Nothing has to be accepted for that to be true. My hand is up and touching nothing, and every repair and every idea is God's.
