The Map Facing the Folding Chairs

This message is for courage for one bounded five-minute briefing from a capable researcher who turns her findings map to the wall whenever a known volunteer circle gathers

For the researcher who turns her own map to the wall the moment anybody walks in.

You hear the outer door before anybody else does. Three years of waiting for it will do that. There's a particular scrape it makes on the tile, and you're up and across the room before the second footstep.

The map goes face to the wall. It's on a board, so it turns easily, and you've got it down to about four seconds. Then you sit back down with a notebook open in front of you, looking like a woman doing paperwork, which you are not.

That map is eighteen months of walking. Every corner where somebody said the lighting frightens them. Every stretch where a parent won't let a child go alone. Colored pins, a legend in your own handwriting, and six streets nobody in that volunteer circle has ever thought about.

Turning the map toward the wall is not tidiness and it is not preference, it is fear of the faces in those folding chairs, and fear is what this answers. Scripture says Hagar called God the One who sees, and the Holy Spirit is not impatient with a woman who is frightened of being looked at.

The Map Facing the Folding Chairs

Naming What You Are Afraid Of

Get the shape of it right, because the wrong diagnosis is part of why nothing has moved in eighteen months.

You are not afraid the research is weak. You know where it's thin, you know which two streets need another month, and you could say so out loud in one sentence. The work isn't the problem.

The fear is about standing beside something you made while people look at it. Not the map being examined. You being examined, in the same glance, in a room with folding chairs and eleven faces, all of them forming a private view you will never get to answer.

Your fear is about being appraised, not about being unprepared. The written Word says the God who sees is the One who found Hagar in a wilderness, and the Holy Spirit is at work in the part of you that would rather not be looked at while she explains.

That distinction matters. Most advice for this assumes you doubt your own work. You don't. It was never the missing piece.

What Turning It to the Wall Has Cost

The habit buys something real, and it deserves an honest accounting rather than a scolding.

Face to the wall, nobody appraises you. The map stays exactly as good as you know it to be, unaffected by anybody's glance, and you stay a woman doing paperwork, which is a safe thing to be in a room. That's a real peace and you built it carefully.

Here's the other column. Eighteen months of walking has helped nobody yet. The six streets are still six streets nobody has thought about. A parent is still not letting a child walk that stretch, and the reason is on a board facing a wall in a room that person has never been in.

You are keeping the map safe from being seen, and being seen is the only way it works. Scripture ties your standing to the God who sees you rather than to eleven faces on folding chairs, and the Holy Spirit steadies a person under real exposure rather than pretending it is nothing.

Nothing here asks you to present at a conference, put your name on a report, or become somebody who enjoys this. Five minutes and a board turned round is the whole of it.

What Five Minutes Would Actually Cost

Count it honestly, because the fear has been charging you for a year and a half and has never been asked to show its arithmetic.

If you turn the board round and talk for five minutes, here is the realistic spread. They're interested and ask two questions you can answer. They ask one you can't, so you say you don't know yet, which is the correct answer and costs you nothing at all. They're tired, they nod, and it goes no further this month.

Take the middle one seriously for a second, because it's the one you dread most and it's the cheapest of the three. A researcher who says I don't know yet is doing the job properly. The room hears somebody who can tell the difference between what she has walked and what she has guessed, which is the whole reason a map like yours is worth looking at.

None of those ends with eleven people revising their view of your character. That's what the fear keeps implying, and it has never once been made to justify the claim.

Five minutes of attention on your work is not a verdict on you. The written Word puts your worth in the sight of the God who sees rather than in the glance of a room, and the Holy Spirit keeps it there while you speak.

Thou God Seest Me

There's a moment in Genesis where a woman with no standing at all, running away into a desert, gives God a name nobody had used before.

> And she called the name of the LORD that spake unto her, Thou God seest me: for she said, Have I also here looked after him that seeth me? > Genesis 16:13 (KJV)

Hagar was a servant, pregnant, alone, and about as far from a room with folding chairs as a person can get. The name she reaches for is not the God who rescues or the God who provides, though He had done both. It's the God who sees me.

Sit with why that was the comfort. Being seen was the thing she'd have had every reason to fear, given who she was and what her situation looked like. What she found in the desert was that being fully seen by God turned out to be the safest thing that had ever happened to her.

You are already completely seen, and that sight is safety rather than exposure. The written Word gives God the name of the One who sees, and the Holy Spirit makes that a place to stand in a room full of folding chairs.

There is a difference between being watched and being seen, and the room has never been able to offer the second one. What those chairs give you is attention, which is thin and short lived and mostly about them. What God gives is sight, which is complete and has been in place for years.

The fear has been treating the thin thing as though it were the complete one.

Declare this over yourself

You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so what follows is not a claim made out of your own authority. It is agreement, said back to God in His own words, while the Holy Spirit carries it. How He orders the rest of it is His to decide, and He answers in His own way and in His own time.

Said by a woman already named as His, out of that naming rather than in search of it. Who looks at the map, and what they ask, is God's.

I am not too much and I am not too little, and being looked at while I explain my own work does not disqualify me. The written Word of God gives Him the name of the One who sees me, and a woman alone in a wilderness found that sight to be safety rather than exposure. Ordinary faces in an ordinary room are not a court. The Holy Spirit supplies courage in the room itself rather than in the days before it, and He stands beside me while I speak. My fear is real, it is not vanity, and it does not get to keep a board facing a wall. He has been looking at all of it the entire time. I take one breath, and every glance is God's.
