When the Meeting Moved On

For the leader who had the necessary sentence ready and watched the agenda turn the page.

Which line was it?

You have the paper still. Six closed laptops around a long table and one printed agenda with a sentence underlined in biro, and the underlining was done during the meeting rather than before it, which is how you know the moment was real.

It was item four. Somebody described how the work would be shared out, and the description was not accurate. You knew exactly which person it would land on and how much they were already carrying. You had about nine words ready.

Then item five started. Somebody's laptop made a noise. You looked down at your own notes and underlined the line instead of saying it. Afterward everybody stood around in the warm light talking easily, and you went back to your desk.

A sentence that arrived too late for item four is not a debt, and the meeting was not lost because of you. Scripture says God touched a man's mouth and said, Behold, I have put my words in thy mouth, while the Holy Spirit is at work in the next honest opening rather than the one that closed.

What You Have Been Doing Since

Be exact about it, because the replaying has been going on for weeks and it has stopped being useful.

You have gone back to item four perhaps sixty times. Each time you say the nine words in your head, and each time they are better than they would have been out loud, which is what happens to every sentence that gets rehearsed after the fact.

Meanwhile the actual situation is unchanged and entirely addressable. The person is still carrying too much. The arrangement is still wrong. None of that was sealed by a laptop making a noise, and none of it requires a meeting to be reopened.

You have been auditing a lost second while the actual matter sits open and fixable. The written Word says God puts His words in a mouth rather than holding a person to a moment already past, while the Holy Spirit works in what is still in front of you.

Why It Didn't Come Out

There's a reason, and it isn't weakness, and it deserves a proper name.

What you had was a correction of somebody else in front of four other people. That is not a small act in any room, and in a room you lead it is smaller still, because a leader's correction carries a weight the leader did not choose and cannot put down.

There's another part. You were not entirely sure how much the person was carrying. You had an impression rather than a figure. Saying it out loud would have meant speaking for somebody who was sitting right there and had not asked you to.

You were declining to speak for somebody who had not asked, which is respect rather than cowardice. Scripture puts God's words in a mouth without requiring a person to speak over anybody, while the Holy Spirit does not send a leader into a room to make a point.

What Is Still Available

Here's what the road forward looks like, and none of it involves reopening item four.

The first piece is a conversation with one person, not a room. You ask the person who is carrying it what their actual load looks like this month. Not whether they're all right, because everybody says yes to that. What is on your list and what would you take off it if you could.

The second piece is a sentence to whoever made the arrangement, said privately and without an audience. I want to look again at how item four lands on one person. That is not a correction and it does not put anybody in front of a room.

Neither of those requires an apology from anybody. Neither of them mentions the meeting. Both of them fix the thing that the nine words were actually for, which was never about being right in a room.

The work the sentence was for is still available, and it does not need the room it was born in. The written Word says God puts His words in your mouth, while the Holy Spirit supplies them for a corridor as readily as for an agenda item.

What a Leader Is Not Required to Be

There's a standard you have been holding yourself to, and it is worth reading out loud so you can hear how impossible it is.

It says a leader catches everything in the room, in real time, while it is happening, and says the right sentence at the right second without thinking about it. Anything less is a failure of nerve.

Nobody meets that standard. The people who appear to are working from a previous version of the same meeting, or they are wrong more often than you notice, or they are simply faster talkers, which is a different quality entirely from being right.

What a room actually needs from whoever leads it is somebody who notices, which you did, and who does something about it afterward, which is still entirely open to you. Speed is the least important of the three and it is the only one you have failed.

You noticed, which is the rare part, and noticing is not undone by a slow second. The written Word says He has put His words in your mouth rather than requiring you to be quick with them, while the Holy Spirit does the work in the hour rather than at the pace of an agenda.
