The Word I Kept Behind My Teeth

This message is for courage to speak and release from the words not spoken, for a man who has held a true sentence back so long that holding it has become a habit

For the man who has held a true sentence so long that the holding has become the habit.

Picture a library at closing time, with the warm light pooled over the returns desk and the last of the evening readers filing out past a trolley loaded with large print.

A man is steadying the trolley while a woman laughs about the weight of it. They have this exchange most Thursdays. He has known her eleven years, since before either of them worked here, and there is a sentence he has been carrying for about four of those.

It is not a difficult sentence. It is about what her steadiness did for him in a bad year, and about the fact that he has never told her, and it would take nine seconds to say.

He has reached the edge of it perhaps forty times. Every time, something in his jaw closes and he says something about the trolley instead.

A word held back forty times is not forty failures, it is one habit doing what habits do. Scripture says God asks who made a man's mouth and promises to be with it and teach what to say, while the Holy Spirit is at work in the next opening rather than the last one.

The Word I Kept Behind My Teeth

When It Stopped Being a Decision

Be exact about it, because the difference between a decision and a habit is the difference between guilt and a plain problem you can solve.

The first time, it was a decision. There was a reason. It was not the right evening, or she was busy, or you were not sure how it would sound, and you decided to leave it, which was a reasonable call made by a reasonable man.

Somewhere around the sixth or seventh time it stopped being decided. Your jaw started doing it before you did. Now the closing happens first and the reason gets supplied afterward, which is the ordinary mechanics of any habit and is not a moral event.

You are not choosing silence forty times, you are running a groove you cut early on. The written Word says God made the mouth and promises to be with it, while the Holy Spirit works on a groove rather than scolding a man for having one.

That matters, because a habit answers to a different treatment than a sin does. Nobody needs to make you feel worse. You need one interruption in the pattern, placed early enough to be before the jaw.

Where the Interruption Goes

Here's what the road forward looks like, and it is mechanical rather than emotional, which is why it will work.

The sentence cannot go where you have been trying to put it, which is at the end of an exchange, after the trolley, in the gap before somebody leaves. That gap is exactly where the groove lives and your jaw gets there first every time.

Put it at the start instead. Before the trolley, before the weather, in the first ten seconds while you are still walking toward each other. There's something I've been meaning to say for about four years. Then the sentence.

Starting is easier than finishing for a man with your particular difficulty. The groove gets no grip at the beginning of a conversation because there is nothing yet to retreat into.

You are not short of courage, you are aiming at the wrong second of the conversation. Scripture promises God will be with a mouth and teach it what to say, while the Holy Spirit supplies words at the opening of a thing rather than only at its close.

What the Four Years Have Not Cost

Here's the part the guilt gets wrong, and it is worth saying plainly before Thursday comes round again.

She is not short of anything. She has had eleven years of a man who steadies the trolley, who is there on the same evening every week, who has never once been unreliable about it. That is not a lesser thing than a sentence. In most weeks it is a larger one.

What she does not have is the specific information in your nine seconds, which is that her steadiness carried somebody through a year she probably never knew was bad. That is worth her having. It is not a debt you owe her, and she has not been going without.

Getting that distinction right is what will let you say it well. A sentence handed over as a gift lands differently from a sentence delivered as a repayment, and she will hear the difference immediately even if neither of you could name it.

You are giving her something she does not have rather than repaying something you took. The written Word puts God's own words in a mouth rather than a debt on a man, while the Holy Spirit makes a gift sound like a gift.

Nothing here requires a scene at a returns desk. Nine seconds, at the start, on an ordinary Thursday.

Who Hath Made Man's Mouth

There's an exchange in Exodus where a man tells God he cannot speak, and the reply he gets is not encouragement.

> And the LORD said unto him, Who hath made man's mouth? or who maketh the dumb, or deaf, or the seeing, or the blind? have not I the LORD? Now therefore go, and I will be with thy mouth, and teach thee what thou shalt say. > Exodus 4:11-12 (KJV)

The answer is a question about manufacture. Who made the mouth. It shifts the whole subject off the man and onto the One who built him, which is different ground from being told he will manage.

Then the promise arrives in two parts. I will be with thy mouth, and teach thee what thou shalt say. Presence first, content second.

He does not hand over a script and step back. He goes along, which is the part a man with a habit in his jaw actually needs, because a script does not help anybody whose difficulty is in the first second rather than in the words.

God made your mouth, He goes with it, and He supplies what it says. The written Word gives both the presence and the words, while the Holy Spirit keeps that promise at a returns desk on a Thursday.

Declare this over yourself

You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so what follows is not a claim made out of your own authority. It is agreement, said back to God in His own words, while the Holy Spirit carries it. How He orders the rest of it is His to decide, and He answers in His own way and in His own time.

You speak here as a man God has already claimed, from a standing that was not conditional on saying anything. When the sentence is spoken, and to whom, is God's.

I am not silenced, and years of holding a true sentence are not a debt I am carrying. The written Word of God says He made man's mouth, goes with my mouth and teaches me what I shall say, which puts the making and the teaching both on Him. Holding became a habit, and a habit is not a verdict. The Holy Spirit gives the words as the hour asks for them, and He gets there before I do. Nobody was charged for the years I was quiet. I will ask before I put a true sentence into somebody's hands. My hand is down and my palm is open, and every first line still ahead of me is God's.
