For the woman who needed ten minutes to check one assumption and watched the decision go through instead.
Ten minutes would have been granted. That's the part you have never let yourself look at directly, because it is much easier to believe the room would have refused.
You know that room. You have asked for smaller and stranger accommodations in it and been given them without comment. There was no hostility in it that morning, no pressure to finish, and the chair had said twice that there was time.
What happened was that you did the arithmetic in your head, found a number you could not reconcile with the number on the slide, and needed to check one source. Ten minutes. You opened your mouth about a third of the way and then the chair moved to the vote.
One unasked pause is not a failure of nerve, and the decision that went through is not on your account. Scripture says the Holy Ghost shall teach you in the same hour what you ought to say, while the Holy Spirit is at work in the next appropriate moment rather than the one already closed.
What You Have Been Replaying
Be exact about it, because the version you have been running for months is heavier than the facts will carry.
The decision went through. It may be wrong. You still do not know, because you never did check the source, which is worth noticing, because the checking is available and free and you have not done it in five months.
What you have been replaying instead is the third of a second in which your mouth opened. That moment has been examined more times than the actual arithmetic has, which tells you the trouble is no longer about a number on a slide.
You have been auditing a hesitation rather than checking a figure. The written Word promises the Spirit will teach you in the hour what to say rather than holding you to a moment already gone, while the Holy Spirit tends that decision without needing your mouth to have been faster.
That's a release, and it is available today, and it does not require the meeting to be reopened.
Why Nothing Came Out
There's a reason it stayed in, and it is not weakness, and it deserves a proper name.
Asking for a pause is different from asking a question. A question fits inside a meeting. A pause stops one, and everybody in the room notices, and the person who calls it becomes the reason the morning ran long.
There's more. You were not sure. You had a discrepancy rather than an answer, and asking a whole room to wait while you check something you might have misread is a specific kind of exposure that people who are careful with numbers feel very keenly.
You were weighing a real cost, which is not the same as losing your nerve. Scripture promises the words in the hour rather than nerve in advance, while the Holy Spirit gives a way to ask that does not require you to be sure of the answer first.
How to Ask Without Certainty
Here's the sentence that solves the problem you actually had, and it is about fourteen words long.
I have one number I can't reconcile. Can we hold this for ten minutes? That's the whole of it. Said in an ordinary voice, without apology and without a case attached.
Notice what it does not claim. It does not say the slide is wrong. It does not say you have found an error. It reports a state you are genuinely in, which is that two figures do not agree, and asks for a bounded amount of time to resolve it.
Bounded is the important word. Ten minutes is a request a chair can grant without losing the morning. An open ended objection is not, and that is the version you were bracing for, which is why it never came out.
You do not need to be sure before you ask for a pause, only honest about the gap and clear about the minutes. The written Word promises the Spirit teaches what you ought to say in the hour, while the Holy Spirit supplies fourteen plain words to somebody who has decided to use them.
The Figure Is Still There
Here is the part of this that is not about a meeting at all, and it can be dealt with this week.
You never checked the source. The discrepancy that started all of it is still sitting in a document somewhere, unresolved, five months later, and you have spent more hours replaying a hesitation than the checking would have taken.
Go and check it. Not to reopen anything, not to build a case, and not to find out whether you were right. Check it because an unreconciled figure is the one part of this that is genuinely unfinished, and because you will carry it until you know.
If it turns out you were wrong, that is a clean end and you can put the whole spring down. If it turns out you were right, you will know something the team needs to know, and you will be bringing a fact rather than a feeling to whoever should hear it.
The unfinished part is a number, and numbers can be closed. The written Word asks for speech that is gracious rather than for a conscience that never rests, while the Holy Spirit works through an hour of careful checking as readily as through a spoken word.
In the Same Hour
There's a short sentence in Luke that answers the whole problem of not being ready, and it does it by moving where the readiness lives.
> For the Holy Ghost shall teach you in the same hour what ye ought to say. > Luke 12:12 (KJV)
In the same hour. Not the night before, with the slides open and a sentence rehearsed. In the hour itself, which is exactly the hour you cannot prepare for and have been blaming yourself about since the spring.
That is a promise rather than a duty. It doesn't tell you to be quicker. It names Who supplies the words and when, which lifts the whole weight off your preparation and puts it somewhere considerably more reliable.
The words are promised for the hour, and the hour is not yours to arrange. The written Word says the Spirit teaches in the same hour what you ought to say, while the Holy Spirit keeps that promise in a meeting room as readily as anywhere else.
Declare this over yourself
You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so what follows is not a claim made out of your own authority. It is agreement, said back to God in His own words, while the Holy Spirit carries it. How He orders the rest of it is His to decide, and He answers in His own way and in His own time.
You speak here as a woman God has already answered for, from a place that was settled without a vote. When the next opening comes, and what the room does with it, is God's.
I am not silenced, and a pause I did not call last spring is not a debt I am carrying. The written Word of God says the Holy Ghost shall teach me in the same hour what I ought to say, so the words belong to the hour rather than to my preparation. I put down the replay of a third of a second. The Holy Spirit supplies the words in the moment they are wanted, out ahead of me. No decision is on my account. I can ask for ten minutes without knowing in advance what they will show, and an honest discrepancy is reason enough. My hand is down and my palm is open, and every meeting still ahead of me is God's.
