Work Of Hands1 Thessalonians 4:11

The Hem Beneath the Reading Lamp

This message is for to receive ordinary careful work as service to Christ, for an alteration worker who treats the repetitive hems beneath her lamp as separate from spiritual purpose, without using faithfulness as a lever

For the woman who takes up hems under a lamp and has decided none of it has anything to do with God.

Picture a woman at a table under a reading lamp with a pair of trousers across her knee and six pins in her mouth.

Two and a quarter inches off, turned twice so there's no raw edge, and a blind stitch that shows nothing from the front. Forty minutes if the fabric behaves. Rather longer if it's lined, which this one is.

She does eleven of those a week, plus a zip, plus whatever comes in from the shop on the corner. It pays about what you'd expect and she has been doing it for nine years at the same table under the same lamp.

She prays in the mornings. She prays in the evenings. She does not pray at that table, and it has never once occurred to her that the table has any connection to the rest of it.

Careful work under a lamp is not outside the life of God, and it never has been. Scripture says study to be quiet, do your own business, work with your own hands, while the Holy Spirit is at a table with six pins and a lined hem.

The Hem Beneath the Reading Lamp

The Line You Were Taught to Draw

Be exact about it, because the divide has been running for nine years and it has never been looked at.

Nobody taught it directly. What you absorbed is a picture in which the parts of life that carry God's name are the parts that count, and everything else is the machinery that gets you to them.

Under that picture, hems are neutral. Not bad, not sinful, simply outside the subject, which means that about thirty hours of your week has been filed as the part of your life God is not in.

You have divided your week into the part that counts and the part that makes it possible. The written Word puts working with your own hands inside a command rather than outside the subject, while the Holy Spirit does not step out of a room when the lamp goes on.

It shows in the small details. You have never thanked God for a hem. You would not mention this work in a prayer without feeling faintly odd about it. Nine years, and the table has stayed outside.

What Actually Happens at That Table

Here's what you have been doing that nobody, including you, has ever named properly.

A hem is not a repair. Nothing was broken. What comes to your table is clothing that does not fit the person who owns it. What leaves is clothing that does. The difference between those two is most of how a person feels walking into a room.

The man with the lined trousers is going to a funeral on Thursday and the trousers were his father's. The woman with the dress has lost weight for reasons she did not choose and cannot afford to replace anything. You knew both of those and neither of them told you.

You are not shortening fabric, you are making a person fit their own clothes on a day that matters. Scripture names quiet work with the hands as a commission, while the Holy Spirit is at work in a garment that will be worn to a funeral.

There's a second layer to it that you know and have never said out loud. People tell you what they would not tell anybody else at that table. Something about being measured, standing still, with somebody kneeling at your feet with pins, undoes a person's guard in about ninety seconds.

You have heard a great deal over nine years. You have repeated none of it. That is its own kind of work, done in the same hours by the same woman, and there is no name for it and no rate for it either.

What Nobody Is Promising About That Table

There's a version of this teaching that goes wrong, and it is worth refusing before somebody offers it.

That version says that if you do this faithfully as unto the Lord, God will notice and something will follow. More work. Better rates. A shop of your own, or somebody finally saying what your stitching is worth.

None of it appears in the verse. Nine years of hems put God under no obligation. Nothing is accruing, there is no balance anywhere, and the table is not a lever.

Notice what that clears out of the room. If nothing is accruing then nothing was ever at risk, and nine years of careful work were never a deposit that a slow month could have eaten into.

What the verse establishes instead is not a quantity at all. It is a direction, and a direction is either the case or it is not. It cannot be built up and it cannot be spent.

What you get instead is the work itself, received in the doing of it. That sounds smaller than the promise and is considerably larger, because a promise can fail and something already received cannot.

Your work is received rather than banked, and nothing is owed to you for it. The written Word issues quiet handwork as a command rather than as a transaction, while the Holy Spirit is in the hour rather than in a payment.

Work With Your Own Hands, As We Commanded You

There's an instruction in Thessalonians that most people read past, because it sounds like practical advice rather than a commission.

> And that ye study to be quiet, and to do your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you; > 1 Thessalonians 4:11 (KJV)

As we commanded you. That phrase changes the temperature of the whole sentence. Working quietly with your hands is not offered as a fallback for people who never got anything more interesting. It is issued as a command, in the same breath as everything else in that letter.

Study to be quiet is stranger still. Study means pursue, aim at, work toward. A quiet life doing your own work with your own hands is described as something to go after rather than something to put up with until better arrives.

Quiet work with your own hands is a commission rather than a consolation. The written Word issues it as a command, while the Holy Spirit is at a table under a lamp as fully as anywhere else.

A commission is given to somebody. That is what makes it a commission rather than a description of what is left over once the important work is allocated.

Nine years of hems were commissioned work every night, whatever the table looked like from the doorway.

Declare this over yourself

You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so what follows is not a claim made out of your own authority. It is agreement, said back to God in His own words, while the Holy Spirit carries it. How He orders the rest of it is His to decide, and He answers in His own way and in His own time.

Speak these as a woman already received, out of a welcome that was given rather than earned. Who wears the work, and whether they ever think about it, stays with God.

My hands are His, and this table is His, and careful repetitive work is not a lesser grade of life. The written Word of God tells me to work with my own hands as I was commanded, which puts the hands and the commission in the same sentence. I put down the line that filed the sewing on one side and God on the other. The Holy Spirit is under this lamp in the evening, out ahead of me. Tonight's hem is not separate from Him. There is no debt owed me for it, and there is no mechanism to work. My palms are up, and every stitch is God's.
